0%For years, one old tweet followed Wyndham Clark around the internet.
Now we finally know the story behind it.
Fresh off winning his second U.S. Open title, the former Oklahoma State golfer joined Pardon My Take and was asked about a tweet from his college days in which he expressed his dislike for former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
The reason?
As Clark explained, it had nothing to do with football.
According to Clark, a girlfriend at the time cheated on him with Mayfield, leading to some understandable frustration toward the future Heisman Trophy winner.
That's probably about as college of a story as you'll ever hear.
What's funny is how much things have changed.
Years later, Clark said he actually likes Mayfield.
In fact, he praised the former Oklahoma quarterback, said he thinks he's a good NFL quarterback and even joked that hopefully Mayfield hears the story so the two can play golf together someday.
Talk about a plot twist.
A rivalry that once involved heartbreak and frustration has somehow evolved into mutual respect and the possibility of a future round of golf.
That's what makes the story so entertaining.
Because neither Clark nor Mayfield needs any introduction in the state of Oklahoma.
Mayfield became one of the most beloved players in Oklahoma football history, winning the Heisman Trophy and helping lead the Sooners to multiple College Football Playoff appearances.
Clark followed a different path.
After spending three seasons at Oklahoma State and earning Big 12 Player of the Year honors in 2014, he transferred to Oregon following the tragic loss of his mother before eventually becoming one of the best golfers in the world.
Now he's a two-time U.S. Open champion.
And somehow, years later, their stories crossed paths again.
The funniest part may be that what once felt like a genuine grudge now sounds more like something both guys would laugh about.
Time has a way of doing that.
The anger fades.
The perspective changes.
Eventually what once felt like a major problem becomes a funny story told on a podcast.
For Oklahoma sports fans, it's just another bizarre connection between two athletes who helped define their respective programs.
One wore orange and black.
The other crimson and cream.
And years later, it turns out the story wasn't about football at all.
It was about a college relationship.
And apparently, a future golf match that still needs to happen.
Who would win that match?
