Oklahoma State’s eight-game win streak shatters as Gardner-Webb unleashes 19 runs; Cowboys eye redemption in today’s 2 p.m. clash

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Cowboys baseball team saw their impressive eight-game winning streak come to a screeching halt on Friday night, falling 19-5 to the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in a seven-inning affair at O’Brate Stadium.

The loss dropped OSU to 9-4 on the season, while GWU improved to 10-4, pull off an offensive explosion that few saw coming.

Gardner-Webb’s high-scoring output was particularly surprising given how dominant Oklahoma State’s defense had been just the weekend prior against Sam Houston State. In that three-game sweep (5-1, 20-0, and 1-0), the Cowboys allowed a mere one run total, stifling the Bearkats with elite pitching and airtight fielding. OSU pitchers racked up strikeouts and limited hits, holding opponents to a .102 batting average in key outings.

The shutouts in games two and three highlighted a staff that seemed unbreakable, making Friday’s barrage of 19 hits and 19 runs a stark contrast and a reminder of baseball’s unpredictability early in the season.

Friday’s game started competitively but unraveled for the Cowboys. GWU struck first in the top of the first when Matt Ilgenfritz launched a solo home run off OSU starter Hudson Barrett, ending the southpaw’s 15 2/3 innings streak without an earned run. Barrett, making his fourth start, lasted just 1 2/3 innings despite fanning four batters.

The Cowboys responded quickly in the bottom half, as Alex Conover led off with his first homer of the year, a center-field shot, to tie it at 1-1. Kollin Ritchie and Aidan Meola followed with singles, but GWU starter Oliver Ellison escaped further damage.

OSU briefly took the lead in the second. Colin Brueggemann doubled to right, TP Wentworth walked, and with two outs, Brock Thompson delivered a single to center that scored both runners after a fielding error, making it 3-1. Brueggemann finished with two hits, including a double and a triple, adding an RBI.

However, the Bulldogs flipped the script in the third, plating three runs with two outs to grab a 4-3 edge. Zane Burns came in relief for OSU and made a highlight-reel sliding catch by Wentworth to prevent more damage.

GWU pulled away in the fourth with back-to-back homers: a solo shot from Merik Carter and a two-run blast by Kelvin Agosto, extending the lead to 7-3.

Agosto was the star for the Bulldogs, going deep twice and driving in seven RBIs on the night. He added another homer later, while Ilgenfritz contributed three RBIs and Carter three more.

The visitors piled on 12 runs over the final three innings, finishing with 19 hits and two errors. Ellison earned the win (3-0), going five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.

For OSU, Bryce LeBlanc took the loss (0-2) in relief, part of a six-pitcher effort that couldn’t contain the onslaught. The Cowboys managed nine hits but stranded runners and committed one error.

Key stats included Wentworth’s double and two runs scored, Conover’s homer and RBI, and Thompson’s two RBIs. Despite the lopsided score, OSU showed flashes of their potent offense that had fueled the win streak.

Looking ahead to today’s 2 p.m. matchup, the Cowboys aim to even the series. Sophomore left-hander Ethan Lund is slated to take the mound for OSU. Lund enters with a 2-0 record and a sparkling 1.23 ERA, having struck out 28 batters in 14.2 innings while holding opponents to a .102 average. His command will be crucial against a GWU lineup that proved explosive on Friday.

For the Bulldogs, right-hander Matt Stuart is expected to start.

This weekend’s three-game series against Gardner-Webb marks OSU’s first home non-conference set after a strong start that included the sweep of Sam Houston.

Under head coach Josh Holliday, now in his 14th season, the Cowboys have emphasized pitching depth, with relievers like Noah Wech (three saves) providing backend stability. The series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m., offering OSU a chance to salvage a win and regain momentum before Big 12 play.

With a talented roster featuring transfers and returnees like Meola and Ritchie, expect the Pokes to bounce back aggressively in front of the home crowd.
