Are you excited about the future of OSU wrestling?
Oklahoma State wrestling continued to show why it remains one of the premier programs in the country this weekend, bringing home four championships from the U20 World Team Trials and U23 National Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
The Cowboys saw Dreshaun Ross, Landon Robideau, Troy Spratley and Bennett Berge each emerge victorious in their respective brackets, highlighting both the current strength and future potential of the program.
The biggest storyline may have been the performance of incoming freshman Dreshaun Ross. Competing at 125kg in the U20 World Team Trials, Ross battled his way through a loaded field before earning a spot on Team USA for the U20 World Championships. After dropping the opening match of the championship series against U.S. Open champion Coby Merrill, Ross responded with back-to-back victories to claim the spot. His resilience was on full display throughout the tournament, including a pin in just 53 seconds and a technical fall over Michael Mocco.
Joining Ross on Team USA will be NCAA champion Landon Robideau. Already positioned in the championship series after winning the U.S. Open earlier this spring, Robideau left little doubt about his standing, defeating Melvin Miller in two straight matches while not surrendering a single point.
The U20 performances alone would have made for a successful weekend, but Oklahoma State's veterans added to the trophy collection in the U23 National Championships.
Troy Spratley delivered one of the most dominant performances of the entire event at 57kg. The Cowboy standout won all seven of his matches without allowing a single point. Six of those victories came by technical fall, including both championship matches against Missouri's Mack Mauger. Spratley's run reinforced his status as one of the nation's top wrestlers heading into next season.
Transfer addition Bennett Berge made an immediate statement in his first major competition as a Cowboy. The former South Dakota State All-American rolled through the 86kg bracket, winning seven consecutive matches on his way to a U23 national title. After recording four straight technical falls to open the tournament, Berge defeated former teammate Brock Fettig in consecutive championship matches to secure the crown.
The weekend wasn't just about the four champions. Ronnie Ramirez advanced all the way to the U20 finals as a No. 14 seed, while Dee Lockett reached the championship series at 74kg. Casey Swiderski added a fifth-place finish in the U23 division, and nine of Oklahoma State's 10 U23 competitors recorded at least three victories.
More than anything, the results served as another reminder of the depth being built in Stillwater. Between NCAA champions, All-Americans, elite transfers and incoming freshmen already earning spots on Team USA, Oklahoma State's future appears as bright as ever.
And if this weekend was any indication, the Cowboys may be bringing even more hardware back to Stillwater in the years ahead.
