Fueled by raw energy and high praise from Brian Bosworth, the Sooner football linebacker is transforming into the backbone of a defense primed for SEC dominance in 2026
Kip Lewis has been a big part of Oklahoma’s defense the last couple of years, and he’s stepping into an even bigger role as the emotional leader in 2026.
Lewis opened up about it on the Sooner Smiths Live podcast this past week: "I don't even realize that I do it," Lewis said. "... But no, I mean it's just mostly kind of everything on game day is just like raw, like raw, like pure, genuine, like energy as much as I can. Trying to help the team win... I try to create as much synergy as I can."
That’s exactly what you want from a guy in the middle of your defense. Lewis isn’t out there trying to be the loudest guy just for show. He’s bringing genuine energy and trying to get everyone playing together.
That kind of leadership matters, especially in the SEC where games are physical and emotional from the first snap.
His best season was last year, as he tallied 76 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks. He’s a guy who shows up every week and makes plays.
But it’s not just the stats — it’s the way he plays with that edge and brings everyone along with him.
Sooner legend Brian Bosworth had some strong words about Lewis back in January during an interview with KREF. The Boz called him the "backbone of the defense," highlighting his leadership and energy.
Bosworth said: "With his energy and his leadership, he could do some great things for not only the guys that are playing and are gonna be on the field immediately for next year, but also for those guys that are waiting in the wings."
He positioned Lewis as an ideal example for younger players, saying, "Kip can be a great example for young players because Kip knows how to do it."
That’s high praise coming from one of the greatest linebackers in OU history. Bosworth knows what it takes to lead a defense, and he sees that same fire in Lewis.
This is an encouraging sign. The Sooners have a really good defense returning in 2026, and Lewis is one of the main reasons why. He’s a guy who can rally the troops, make plays, and set the tone.
Lewis isn’t just talking about energy — he’s showing it on the field. Last year he was all over the place making tackles, disrupting plays, and leading by example. If he can build on that and continue being that emotional leader, this defense could be one of the best in the country again.
The Sooners have talent all over the field. With John Mateer at quarterback and a loaded group of skill players on offense, they have the pieces to compete. But having a defense that plays with that kind of synergy and leadership from guys like Lewis is what separates good teams from great ones.
This feels like a big year for Kip Lewis. He’s entering his fifth year in the program and has a chance to be one of the best linebackers in the country.
If he keeps bringing that raw, genuine energy and helps the younger guys develop, Oklahoma’s defense is going to be fun to watch.
The Sooners have a chance to be really good in 2026. Having a guy like Kip Lewis leading the defense with that kind of fire is going to help a lot.
