Fresh off a national title, the Sooners bolster their staff with a proven recruiter and former head coach who brings deep familiarity to Skip Johnson’s championship culture

Oklahoma Baseball continues to build on its championship foundation by making a smart, familiar addition to the coaching staff.

According to Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball, the Sooners are hiring Tyler Johnson — the son of head coach Skip Johnson — in an assistant coaching role.

Tyler Johnson spent time as the head coach at McLennan Community College in Texas before serving as the recruiting coordinator at Dallas Baptist this past season. This hire brings immediate family ties and proven experience into the program at a time when Oklahoma are looking to defend their national championship crown.

This move makes a lot of sense on multiple levels. Skip Johnson has built something special in Norman, after leading the Sooners to one of the most impressive underdog runs in recent memory.

Bringing in his son adds a level of trust and continuity that’s hard to replicate with an outside hire. Tyler has seen firsthand how his dad operates, knows the culture they’re building, and understands what it takes to succeed at this level.

Tyler’s background is solid. Leading a junior college program gave him head coaching experience, while his time at Dallas Baptist as recruiting coordinator showed he can identify and bring in talent.

In today’s game, where the transfer portal and high school recruiting are so critical, that experience is valuable. Oklahoma baseball is in a good spot right now, but staying competitive in the SEC means constantly adding the right pieces behind the scenes.

The Sooners are expected to hire more staff roles as well. This feels like part of a larger plan to surround Skip Johnson with people who fit the program’s identity.

After winning the national title in 2026, the expectation is to stay at a championship level, not take a step back. Adding Tyler Johnson could be another step toward long-term stability.

Oklahoma baseball has real momentum after that magical postseason run. The bats came alive at the right time, the pitching stepped up in big moments, and the team showed the fight that defines championship programs. Keeping that going means making thoughtful hires like this one.

Tyler knows the family business and should be able to step in and contribute right away, especially in recruiting and player development.

Skip Johnson has done an outstanding job turning the program around and elevating it to national champion status. Bringing his son on board shows confidence in the direction they’re heading and a desire to keep the staff culture strong and unified.
