The Sooners head to Georgia Tech as a two-seed, launching their 43rd postseason run against The Citadel while eyeing a return to the College World Series
For the fifth consecutive season and the 43rd time in program history, the Oklahoma Sooners have secured a spot in the NCAA Baseball Championship.
On Monday, the 64-team field was unveiled, and the Sooners earned an at-large bid to compete in the Atlanta Regional, hosted by a powerful Georgia Tech squad boasting a stellar 48-9 record.
As the No. 2 seed in the regional, Oklahoma will open postseason play against the No. 3 seed, The Citadel (35-24), on Friday at 4 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The regional host and No. 2 national seed Georgia Tech will take on the No. 4 seed UIC (27-27-1) earlier that day at 11 a.m. CT on ACC Network.
The winner of the Atlanta Regional will advance to face the champion of the Lawrence Regional, which includes No. 15 national seed Kansas, along with Arkansas, Missouri State, and Northeastern.
This marks Oklahoma’s 43rd appearance in an NCAA Regional, the fifth in a row, and the sixth under head coach Skip Johnson.
The Sooners rank eighth all-time in NCAA Tournament appearances with 43, underscoring their status as one of college baseball’s most consistent programs.
Historically, OU holds a strong 101-86 record in NCAA Tournament play. The program has reached the College World Series 11 times and captured national championships in 1951 and 1994, cementing a rich legacy of postseason success.
The Sooners enter the Atlanta Regional with favorable history against their potential opponents.
Oklahoma is 6-1 all-time against host Georgia Tech, including a memorable victory in Atlanta in 2017. Most significantly, the Sooners defeated the Yellow Jackets in the 1994 national championship game to claim their second title.
Against The Citadel, OU is 1-0, having edged the Bulldogs 9-7 in a 2014 matchup in Orlando. A contest against UIC would be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Notably, this is the seventh time in Oklahoma’s last nine NCAA Tournament appearances that the Sooners will compete in a regional hosted by an ACC school. In those six previous regionals at ACC venues, Oklahoma has advanced to the Super Regional round twice, demonstrating their ability to thrive in hostile, high-stakes environments on the road.
The selection committee clearly valued Oklahoma’s body of work this season. The Sooners sit at No. 24 in the final NCAA RPI rankings and boast the sixth-ranked strength of schedule in the country.
They have notched six victories against RPI top-25 teams and 10 wins over top-50 opponents.
Additionally, Oklahoma has nine wins this year against teams that ultimately made the NCAA Tournament field. In just their second season as members of the ultra-competitive Southeastern Conference, the Sooners won four conference series, showcasing their rapid adaptation to one of the nation’s toughest leagues.
Under Coach Johnson, the program has maintained elite status despite the transition to the SEC. The consistent postseason appearances reflect sustained excellence in player development, recruiting, and in-game strategy.
The Atlanta Regional promises exciting matchups and high-level competition. Georgia Tech enters as one of the hottest teams in the country, while The Citadel and UIC will bring their own grit and determination.
For Oklahoma, the path forward starts with a strong opening performance against The Citadel, followed by potential clashes with familiar or new foes.
The road to Omaha begins Friday in Atlanta, and the program that has delivered two national titles is once again ready to chase more hardware.
