After transforming a struggling SEC squad into national champions through a historic postseason run, the veteran skipper secures top honors for masterminding the Sooners' improbable title surge

Skip Johnson just added another huge honor to his résumé.

The American Baseball Coaches Association named Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson the 2026 National Coach of the Year after he led the Sooners to the program’s third national championship. He was also named ABCA Central Region Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.

This one feels especially sweet.

Johnson took a team that finished 11th in the SEC, had a rough finish to the regular season, and turned them into national champions. That’s not just good coaching, that’s special.

Johnson guided OU to a 13-2 victory over North Carolina in the decisive Game 3 of the College World Series final. This marks his first National Coach of the Year award. He previously earned Central Region Coach of the Year honors in 2022 when he took the Sooners to the CWS finals as runners-up.

The path to the 2026 title was anything but easy. The Sooners had to go on the road and knock off No. 2 Georgia Tech (twice), No. 3 Georgia (twice), No. 5 North Carolina (twice), No. 7 Alabama, and No. 15 Kansas. That’s nine wins over nationally seeded teams, the most by any team since seeding started in 1999.

They also beat three conference champions (Georgia Tech, Kansas, and Georgia) along the way. Oklahoma finished the season 43-23 overall. They went 11-2 in the postseason and 5-1 at the College World Series.

This was Johnson and Oklahoma's second trip to the College World Series Championship, as well as their second trip to Omaha. They’ve now made the NCAA Tournament in five straight seasons.

Johnson is now 310-198 (.610) in nine seasons at OU. His teams have had three 40-win seasons and are averaging nearly 40 wins over the last five years. He earned his 300th win as head coach earlier in this magical tournament run.

What makes this even more impressive is how they got here. After a slow start and a brutal SEC stretch, most people had written them off. They lost four straight series to close the regular season and got bounced early in the SEC Tournament. But once the NCAA Tournament started, something clicked.

They became a different team, tougher, more confident, and relentless.

This championship is a testament to Johnson’s leadership, his staff, and the culture they’ve built. He kept this group together through the lows and had them peaking at exactly the right time.

The freshman pitchers stepping up, the bats coming alive in June, and the never-quit mentality all speak to the foundation he’s established in Norman.

For a program with the tradition and expectations Oklahoma has, winning it all in a year like this feels extra special. They weren’t supposed to do this. But they did.

Congrats to Skip Johnson on a well-deserved National Coach of the Year award. He’s built something real here, and this championship is proof that the hard work is paying off.
