Sooners dominate LSU, fueled by a stellar guard trio and sharp shooting, delivering a commanding road victory ignites Oklahoma's late-season momentum
BATON ROUGE, La. - The Oklahoma Sooners delivered a commanding performance on the road, defeating the LSU Tigers 83-67 on Saturday evening at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
This victory marked a significant milestone for the Sooners in their second season competing in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), as it represented their largest margin of victory in an SEC road game to date.
Led by a dominant showing from their guard trio—Nijel Pack, Xzayvier Brown, and Dayton Forsythe—the Sooners racked up an impressive 54 points and 17 field goals from these three players alone.
Pack led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, draining five three-pointers in an efficient display from beyond the arc. Brown contributed 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Coming off the bench, Forsythe added 13 points, also shooting perfectly from the charity stripe at 6-for-6. Their combined efforts provided the offensive firepower that propelled Oklahoma to a convincing win.
The Sooners' overall shooting was sharp throughout the contest. They converted 47% of their field-goal attempts compared to LSU's 35%, and they held a clear edge from three-point range at 38% (10-of-26) to the Tigers' 26% (6-of-23). Oklahoma also excelled at the free-throw line, hitting a season-best 94% (17-of-18), which helped them maintain control when the game tightened.
Center Mohamed Wague was a force inside for the Sooners, finishing with 10 points, a game-high nine rebounds (including five on the offensive glass), and three blocked shots. This performance extended Wague's hot streak, marking the first time in his career that he has scored in double figures in three straight games—a testament to his growing impact on both ends of the floor.
The game started with LSU jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, but Oklahoma quickly responded with a 10-0 run of their own to seize momentum. By the 7:30 mark of the first half, the Sooners had built a 20-11 advantage.
Pack's first three-pointer with 16:51 remaining in the opening period put Oklahoma ahead for good, and they maintained the lead for over 36 minutes of game time. Pack added another trey in the final seconds of the half, sending the Sooners into the locker room with a comfortable 41-33 halftime edge.LSU made a brief push in the second half, cutting the deficit to five points at 53-48 with 13:24 left.
However, Oklahoma responded decisively with an explosive 18-4 run that ballooned their lead to 71-52 with 7:48 remaining. Six different Sooners contributed at least two points during this decisive surge, showcasing the team's depth and balance.
The advantage swelled to 22 points shortly after, thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Jadon Jones and Pack, allowing Oklahoma to cruise to victory in the final minutes. This win improved the Sooners to 15-14 overall and 5-11 in SEC play, marking their fourth victory in the last six games and signaling a positive turnaround after a tougher stretch earlier in the season.
Defensively, Oklahoma was disciplined, committing just eight turnovers (compared to LSU's 10) and outscoring the Tigers 13-9 off those miscues. This marked their third straight single-digit turnover game and their 16th of the season—the most in at least the last 40 years for the program.
Historically, this was only the second all-time meeting between the two teams in Baton Rouge, with Oklahoma also winning the prior matchup in 2015-16 by a narrow 77-75 score as the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
Individually, Pack continued his strong recent form, scoring at least 20 points in six of his last 10 games and draining at least five threes in nine outings this season. Over the past five games, he's been scorching from deep at 60% (21-of-35). Brown, the SEC leader in free-throw percentage at 91%, reached 20+ points for the 12th time this year despite limited attempts from the line in recent contests.
Forsythe, meanwhile, hit double figures for the fourth time in six games after doing so just twice earlier in the campaign.
For LSU (15-14, 3-13 SEC), the loss highlighted ongoing struggles, particularly in shooting and rebounding, as they dropped their fourth straight home game.
UP NEXT: The Sooners now return home to Norman for their regular-season finale against the Missouri Tigers (19-9, 9-6 SEC) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT. The senior night matchup will air on ESPNU, giving Oklahoma fans a chance to celebrate their team’s recent momentum and bid farewell to their seniors in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the home schedule.
This road triumph in Baton Rouge provides a strong boost as the Sooners look to build toward the postseason.
