A ferocious seven-run third inning and Audrey Lowry’s masterful complete-game performance forced a decisive Game 3, keeping the Sooners’ pursuit of a ninth consecutive world series appearance alive
NORMAN, Okla. — The Oklahoma Sooners refused to let their historic postseason run end on Friday night’s disappointing note. In a dominant display of offensive firepower and pitching efficiency, the No. 3-seeded Sooners bounced back with a convincing 7-1 victory over Mississippi State in Game 2 of the Norman Super Regional on Saturday at Love’s Field.
With the series now tied at 1-1, the two teams will face off in a winner-take-all Game 3 on Sunday. The victor will punch their ticket to the Women’s College World Series, while the loser’s season will come to a close.
For Oklahoma, the stakes are clear: extend their remarkable streak of WCWS appearances that dates back to 2015.
For Mississippi State, Sunday represents the program’s best chance yet to reach college softball’s pinnacle stage for the first time in school history.
The Sooners needed just one explosive inning to put the game out of reach. All seven of Oklahoma’s runs came in the third frame, an inning that saw 10 batters come to the plate and left the Bulldogs reeling.
The rally began when freshman standout Kendall Wells delivered an RBI single to put the Sooners on the board. Gabbie Garcia then drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 2-0.
Isabela Emerling added an RBI on a groundout, and Kasidi Pickering crossed the plate on a passed ball to make it 4-0.The inning reached its crescendo when pinch-hitter
Lexi McDaniel stepped to the plate and delivered a massive three-run homer, capping the seven-run outburst and giving Oklahoma all the offense it would need.
The display showcased the depth and versatility of the Sooners’ lineup, with contributions coming from stars and role players alike in a single, decisive frame.
On the mound, Audrey Lowry was outstanding in her complete-game effort. After entering in relief during Friday’s loss, Lowry earned the start in Game 2 and delivered a masterful performance.
She scattered just five hits and two walks across seven full innings while striking out two. Mississippi State managed only one extra-base hit the entire afternoon, never mounting a serious threat or finding any sustained rhythm against Lowry’s command.
The Bulldogs’ offense, which had shown life in the series opener, was largely silenced by the Sooners’ pitching and defense.
This victory was a much-needed response for a Oklahoma team (52-9) that had dropped Game 1 in dramatic fashion after blowing multiple leads.
Head coach Patty Gasso’s squad has now won 10 straight Super Regional series when facing elimination, demonstrating the championship mentality that has defined the program for over a decade.
Oklahoma’s consistency on the biggest stage is unmatched.
The Sooners have reached the Women’s College World Series in every season since 2015 and have captured six national championships during that span. That pedigree gives them confidence heading into Sunday’s decisive contest.
Mississippi State (41-20), meanwhile, has never appeared at the WCWS. The Bulldogs pushed Oklahoma to the brink in Game 1 with a late comeback, but they’ll need to find answers quickly on both sides of the ball if they hope to pull off the upset.
Kendall Wells continued her scorching postseason form, adding another RBI to her impressive tally. The freshman sensation has been a driving force for the Sooners throughout the NCAA Tournament, providing both power at the plate and leadership behind it.
Her ability to set the tone early in the third inning helped spark the decisive rally.
UP NEXT: As the series shifts to Sunday, anticipation will be high at Love’s Field. The Sooners will look to lean on their experience in high-pressure elimination games, while Mississippi State will try to channel the momentum from their Game 1 victory.
The winner of Sunday’s matchup will advance to face elite competition in Oklahoma City at the Women’s College World Series.
For Oklahoma, the goal remains the same: defend their dynasty and chase another national title.
The Sooners have shown resilience all season, and Saturday’s decisive win proved they are far from done.
Game 3 promises to be a memorable showdown worthy of the Super Regional stage.
