Wells continues her historic season, crushing homers and anchoring defense, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors, as her record-breaking power dominates

NORMAN, Okla. - The historic freshman campaign for Oklahoma Sooners softball star Kendall Wells showed no signs of slowing down last week. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) named the first-year catcher its Freshman of the Week, capping off another dominant stretch for the Bogart, Georgia, native.

Wells, already recognized twice as D1Softball National Player of the Week and once as SEC Player of the Week, earned her first SEC Freshman of the Week honor. She shared the weekly accolade with Florida’s Townsen Thomas, highlighting the impressive depth of talent across the conference this season.

In last week’s action, the standout performer delivered at an elite level both at the plate and behind it. Wells batted a scorching .455, crossing the plate six times while launching three home runs and driving in seven runs.

Defensively, as the primary catcher, she recorded 20 putouts and added two assists, showcasing her complete skill set and reliability in one of the game’s most demanding positions.

The highlight of her week came on Sunday against No. 6 Arkansas, when Wells crushed her 34th home run of the season. That towering shot tied the Oklahoma program record for single-season home runs, previously set by Sooners legend Jocelyn Alo. Reaching that milestone as a true freshman in just her first collegiate season underscores the extraordinary power and consistency Wells has brought to Norman from day one.

Through 47 games played, Wells boasts an outstanding slash line of .385 batting average, with 61 runs scored, 34 home runs, and a team-leading 76 RBIs. Her slugging percentage sits at an eye-popping 1.119, reflecting not only her raw power but also her ability to drive the ball consistently with authority.

These numbers place her among the nation’s top offensive threats, regardless of class year, and have fueled discussions about her as a legitimate contender for national player of the year honors.

Wells’ journey this season has been nothing short of record-breaking.

She shattered the NCAA single-season home run record for a freshman earlier in April with her 31st long ball during a high-stakes series against Texas. She has since continued to climb the charts, tying program icon Alo while chasing even bigger marks.

One more home run would give Wells sole possession of the Oklahoma single-season record. Four additional homers would push her past the all-time NCAA single-season mark of 37, set by Arizona’s Laura Espinoza back in 1995.

The Sooners as a team are also on the brink of history. Oklahoma needs just four more home runs to establish a new program and potentially NCAA single-season team record, adding another layer of excitement to an already electric season in Norman.

Looking ahead, the Sooners prepare for a midweek matchup against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday night, followed by a crucial three-game SEC series against No. 11 Georgia this weekend. These contests offer Wells and her teammates prime opportunities to continue their record-chasing pace while maintaining their strong position in the conference standings.

Head coach Patty Gasso and the Oklahoma program have built a dynasty on developing elite talent, and Wells fits seamlessly into that tradition. Her poise as a freshman catcher, combined with her prodigious power at the plate, has drawn comparisons to some of the greatest players in recent memory.

Beyond the individual accolades and statistics, Wells has emerged as a vocal leader and energizer for a talented Sooners roster that continues to dominate opponents.

As the regular season winds toward the postseason, all eyes remain on Kendall Wells and the Oklahoma Sooners. Whether she claims the single-season home run crown outright or helps her team set new benchmarks, this freshman sensation has already etched her name into the program’s storied history books.

With several games still remaining, including high-profile conference battles, the best may still be yet to come for Wells and a Sooners squad hungry for more hardware and records.

Kendall Wells is redefining what it means to be an impact freshman.
