The Brenham star snubbed Texas and Ohio State for Norman, citing Deland McCullough’s personal coaching touch as the catalyst for joining the nation's top-ranked recruiting class

The Oklahoma Sooners just picked up another solid piece for the 2027 class as three-star running back Jakoby Dixon from Brenham, Texas, announced his commitment to OU.

The Brenham native chose the Sooners over a loaded list of big programs that included Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon, Ohio State, and several others.

Dixon is a Texas kid who bought into what Brent Venables and new running backs coach Deland McCullough are building in Norman.

Dixon has been putting up numbers since he was a freshman.

As a freshman in 2023, he earned Texas District 10-5A-II Offensive MVP honors. Then as a sophomore in 2024, he took home the Overall District MVP award.

That’s production and respect early.

According to 247Sports, he holds an 86 rating as a three-star prospect, ranked as the No. 92 running back nationally and No. 149 player in the state of Texas. His 247 Composite score sits at 0.8767 (No. 704 nationally, RB No. 51).

Oklahoma offered Dixon in mid-May and wasted no time making him a priority. It didn’t take long for OU to jump to the very top of his list.

Dixon told Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman shortly after the offer: “Oklahoma is definitely No. 1 to me. It stood out to me a lot, especially the coaches, because they showed a lot of love to me. I can’t wait to be down there getting it done.”

What really sealed it was the personal touch.

Deland McCullough came down to see him in person when a lot of other coaches didn’t. Dixon said McCullough laid out exactly what his future at Oklahoma would look like and showed him a real plan.

“He came down here and no other coach did that,” Dixon told SoonerScoop. “Told me what was going to happen and he has a plan for my future. You look at his resume and what he’s done — I don’t think there’s one back in college football that wouldn’t want to play for him.”

After the commitment, Dixon posted via Rivals: “Thank you to everyone who supported me through my journey, this is just the beginning.”

This addition is big for depth.

With Jaxsen Stokes flipping to Cal recently, Dixon joins four-star Keldrid Ben as the second committed running back in the 2027 class.

McCullough now has two talented young backs to develop who both bring different styles to the room.

As of right now, Oklahoma still sits with 21 commitments in the 2027 cycle and remains the clear No. 1 class in the country on the 247Sports Composite.

Three five-stars, a bunch of four-stars, and now another Texas kid in the fold, the class is still tracking toward being one of the best, if not the best, high school recruiting hauls in program history.

Venables and his staff are doing exactly what they set out to do: building through high school talent with real relationships while keeping the momentum rolling after the CFP appearance.
