The Sooners chase their 20th conference title against a stacked field, can they conquer Sea Island's challenging course and reignite their championship form?

St. Simons Island, Ga. - Oklahoma men's golf team is gearing up for an exciting and highly competitive week as they head to the 2026 SEC Championship at the prestigious Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.

The Sooners, one of the most consistent and accomplished programs in college golf, will tee off starting Wednesday morning in pursuit of their 20th conference title overall and their fourth under the guidance of longtime head coach Ryan Hybl.

This year's championship promises to be one of the strongest fields in recent memory, featuring an impressive lineup of 10 teams currently ranked in the nation's top 20 and 14 of the top 50 according to NCAA Clippd rankings.

The tournament kicks off with three rounds of stroke play from Wednesday through Friday, involving all 16 SEC teams. After 54 holes, the top eight teams will advance to a thrilling match play format.

Quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, with the championship match set for Sunday. The match play rounds will receive live broadcast coverage on SEC Network and SECN+, allowing fans across the country to follow the action.Oklahoma enters the event ranked No. 16 nationally and brings a rich history of success to the coastal venue.

Over the past decade-plus, the Sooners have established themselves as a premier program, securing 43 tournament victories since the beginning of 2015. This includes the program's crowning achievement: the 2017 NCAA national championship. Oklahoma has qualified for a program-record streak of consecutive NCAA Championships and has earned a top-10 national seed in each of the last seven seasons.

Since the 2021-22 season, OU leads all current SEC programs with 20 stroke-play wins, underscoring their dominance in the regular season and their ability to perform under pressure.

Head coach Ryan Hybl, Oklahoma's all-time winningest coach, continues to build on a remarkable legacy. Since taking over in 2009, he has guided the Sooners to 50 tournament titles, the 2017 national championship, and 14 straight appearances in the NCAA Finals.

Hybl's accolades include being named the 2022 Dave Williams National Coach of the Year and his induction into the GCAA Hall of Fame in 2024. Under his leadership, 17 Sooners have earned a total of 34 All-America honors, reflecting the high level of player development and success that has become synonymous with the Oklahoma program.

This season, the Sooners captured one team victory in the fall, winning the Ka'anapali Classic with a standout program-record performance of 63-under par. That early success highlighted the team's potential for low scoring and strong teamwork.

However, the spring portion of the schedule has been more challenging, with the team posting six consecutive finishes of fifth place or lower. Now, as they enter postseason play, Oklahoma is focused on regaining momentum and peaking at the right time in what figures to be a grueling and wind-affected test at Sea Island.

The Sooners' lineup for the championship features a talented and experienced group. Leading the way is junior All-American Ryder Cowan, who has been named to the Hogan Award watch list as one of the top collegiate golfers in the country.

Cowan has delivered consistent excellence throughout the season, including multiple top finishes and a semifinalist nod for the Ben Hogan Award. Joining him is senior All-SEC performer Jase Summy, a veteran whose steady play and leadership have been assets for the team.

The lineup also includes 2025 freshman All-American Clark Van Gaalen, PJ Maybank III, and Cameron Cheek. True freshman Coltrane Mittag will serve as the substitute, providing valuable depth as the team navigates the demanding format.

Last year's SEC Championship provided a mix of highs and lows for Oklahoma. The Sooners finished fourth in stroke play to advance to match play, powered by an impressive runner-up individual finish from Drew Goodman.

They ultimately fell to Florida in the quarterfinals, but the experience of competing in the high-stakes match play environment should serve this year's squad well as they look to go further. The venue itself adds another layer of challenge and beauty to the event.

The SEC Championship returns to Sea Island Golf Club for the 25th time in 2026, with the event having been held on St. Simons Island every year since 2001. The Seaside Course, a par-70 layout stretching approximately 7,005 yards, is an ocean-side links-style track originally built in 1929 and redesigned by Tom Fazio in 1999.

It is known for its tight fairways, natural dunes, and unpredictable coastal winds that can change directions and intensify throughout the round. The course also hosts the PGA TOUR's RSM Classic, giving the collegiate players a taste of professional-level conditions.

Golfers must navigate strategic shot placement, firm greens, and the ever-present influence of the Atlantic Ocean breezes, making precision and course management essential for success.

Spectators are welcome to attend the championship at no cost. Live scoring will be available throughout the event via Scoreboard by Clippd, providing real-time updates on team and individual standings.

For Oklahoma, this week represents a critical opportunity to showcase their depth, resilience, and championship pedigree.

With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising young talent, the Sooners will look to navigate the demanding Seaside Course, capitalize on their historical success in big events, and make a deep run in both stroke and match play.
