David Stone, John Mateer, and Tate Sandell were all recognized as top 10 players at their positions in the upcoming EA Sports College Football 27 video game
EA Sports dropped the team ratings for College Football 27, and Oklahoma got some well-deserved respect.
The Sooners come in at 87 overall, tied with Georgia for the 9th-best team in the game. OU has the talent and the coaching to hang with just about anybody, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
The game also has OU’s offense rated 87 (10th-best in the country) and the defense at 88 (tied for 7th). That defensive rating tracks, as Brent Venables’ units have been pains to play against since he got here.
A few individual players got some serious love too:
- Defensive tackle David Stone is the highest-rated DT in the entire game at 94.
- Quarterback John Mateer is the 10th-highest rated QB with an 89.
- Kicker Tate Sandell is the top-rated kicker in the game at 87.
Those are some big individual numbers, especially for Stone. He’s been a monster on the interior and the game clearly sees him as one of the best defensive players in college football.
There are also some fun new features in this year’s version. Mascot mode is back, now called Mascot Mashup, so you can actually play as Boomer the Mascot.
They’ve also added deep Dynasty budgeting with NIL spending, dynamic accumulating weather, expanded Road to Glory positions (including TE, Edge, and FS), and a much-improved Team Builder that now carries over created school history.
On the broadcast side, they’ve shaken things up with Joel Klatt replacing Kirk Herbstreit in the booth, Holly Rowe joining from the sidelines, and Chris Fowler back as the lead play-by-play guy.
Overall, these ratings feel fair. Oklahoma isn’t being put in the absolute elite tier yet, which is understandable after the inconsistency the last couple of years, but 9th overall with a top-10 offense and top-7 defense shows the respect for the trajectory of the program.
With Venables calling the defense, Mateer under center, and a loaded group of skill players, it should be a blast to play.
The new features sound like they’ll add a lot more depth, too. 87 overall with elite defensive pieces and a quarterback with upside is a good place to be.
