The Oklahoma Sooner standouts join an elite shortlist after dominating the SEC, a rare feat marks only the third time teammates have debuted as top three national finalists
For just the second time in the history of the Oklahoma Sooners softball program, and only the third time in the prestigious award’s existence, two players from the same team have earned spots among the TUCCI/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Freshman of the Year Top 3 Finalists.
OU standouts Kai Minor and Kendall Wells were officially named to the elite list, joining Nebraska’s Alexis Jensen as the three finalists for one of college softball’s highest freshman honors.
This achievement underscores the remarkable depth and talent of the 2026 Oklahoma Sooners, a team that has once again dominated the collegiate landscape.
The last time two Sooners reached this level of recognition came in 2021, when dynamic duo Jayda Coleman and Tiare Jennings earned finalist nods. Prior to that, the only other instance occurred in 2016 when Florida’s Amanda Lorenz and Kelly Barnhill made the top three together.
Reaching this milestone again highlights Oklahoma’s continued ability to develop and showcase elite freshman talent under Head Coach Patty Gasso.
Both Minor and Wells have enjoyed breakout seasons that extend far beyond this latest honor. The pair were both selected to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 25 list, with Wells advancing even further to the Top 10.
They also earned First Team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors together, a significant accomplishment in what many consider the toughest conference in the nation.
Wells made program history by becoming the first Oklahoma player to win SEC Freshman of the Year.
Additionally, both were named Softball America First Team Freshman All-Americans, with Wells earning the publication’s Freshman of the Year award.
Kai Minor: The Speedy Center Fielder from California
A freshman from Irvine, California, Kai Minor has been a transformative presence in center field for the Sooners. Starting all 53 games, she has delivered flawless defense with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
At the plate, Minor has been nothing short of sensational, leading all freshmen nationally with a stellar .446 batting average. She currently paces the Sooners in multiple offensive categories, including hits (79), doubles (17), triples (six), and stolen bases (17).
Minor is also tied with Wells for the team lead in runs scored. Her consistency at the plate stands out, as evidenced by her team-leading 27 multi-hit games. Just last weekend during her NCAA Regional debut, Minor delivered in critical moments, recording a double and a home run across two games.
Her combination of contact hitting, extra-base power, and elite baserunning has made her a constant threat and a cornerstone of Oklahoma’s high-powered offense.
Kendall Wells: The Record-Breaking Power Hitter and Defensive Anchor
From Bogart, Georgia, Kendall Wells has emerged as one of the most dominant freshmen in college softball history. Playing catcher, she has combined elite defensive skills with unprecedented offensive production.
Wells shattered multiple records this season, setting new SEC, NCAA freshman, and Oklahoma single-season home run marks with an astounding 37 long balls.
That total ties for second in NCAA single-season history, an incredible feat for any player, let alone a freshman.Wells also leads the Sooners with 81 RBIs while posting a remarkable 1.030 slugging percentage, the best mark in the SEC and fifth-best nationally.
Her ability to drive in runs and change games with one swing has been instrumental in Oklahoma’s success throughout the year.
Behind the plate, her leadership and defensive prowess have provided stability for the pitching staff during high-pressure moments. As NFCA First Team All-Midwest Region honorees, both Minor and Wells remain in contention for NFCA All-American honors, which will be announced later this month.
The winner of the 2026 NFCA Freshman of the Year award will be revealed just before the start of the Women’s College World Series, adding even more excitement to what has already been a historic season for the Sooners.
The recognition of Minor and Wells not only celebrates their individual brilliance but also reflects the culture of excellence within the Oklahoma softball program. Their ability to step up as true impact players as freshmen speaks volumes about their work ethic, talent, and the coaching staff’s development philosophy.
As the postseason continues, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see which of these two dynamic Sooners, or Nebraska’s Jensen, will take home the sport’s top freshman honor.
