Following a dominant semifinal victory, Skip Johnson is calling on Sooner Nation to flood Omaha with crimson as Oklahoma battles North Carolina for the national title
OMAHA, Neb. - Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson sent a clear message to the OU faithful after the Sooners advanced to the College World Series final: it’s time to show up in Omaha and pack the stands.
After a dominant 11-4 win over Georgia in the semifinals, the Sooners are playing for a national championship. This is their second trip to the CWS final in five years after falling to Ole Miss in 2022.
Now they’ll face No. 5 North Carolina in a best-of-three series, and Skip wants the whole state to make the trip.
Here’s what he had to say: "Have the whole state that are Sooners to come up here... It's bigger than us. It really is. It's really about our state. It's really about being an OU Sooner. It's about all those details, being thankful, the president was here. We had Barry Switzer here. We had Bob Stoops, Jennie Baranczyk -- Trish, Toby Keith's wife was here. I hadn't seen her in a long time. And it brings tears to my eyes. And Joe C and Roger Denny, I mean, John Mateer, our quarterback. I mean, that's what being an OU Sooner is about. It's about being a family. And the more those people can get up here and get it going, the better it is."
That’s powerful stuff from Skip. You can hear the emotion in his voice.
This run has brought out legends and celebrities, and now he wants the fans to do their part. It’s about more than just one team, t’s about representing the state and the Sooner family.
Oklahoma has earned this moment. They’ve been on an incredible postseason journey, knocking off No. 2 Georgia Tech at home, sweeping Kansas on the road, and now taking down Alabama and Georgia in Omaha.
The bats have been alive, the pitching has been clutch, and this team is playing with real confidence. Getting back to the final after 2022 shows real growth under Skip Johnson.
This is a relatively easy road trip for a lot of Oklahoma fans. Omaha isn’t that far, and a weekend in Nebraska for the CWS final is something you’ll remember forever.
Nebraska fans showed up in droves for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Oklahoma City earlier this year and basically took over Paycom Center.
There’s absolutely no reason OU fans can’t do the same, or better, in Charles Schwab Field and outnumber North Carolina fans.
The atmosphere is already electric in Omaha, but imagine what it would be like with a sea of crimson in the stands. This is Sooner Nation's chance to make a statement and show the country what Sooner Nation is all about.
Here’s the series schedule:
- Game 1: Oklahoma vs. No. 5 North Carolina – Saturday, June 20 at 8:00 PM on ESPN
- Game 2: No. 5 North Carolina vs. Oklahoma – Sunday, June 21 at 2:30 PM on ABC
- Game 3 (if necessary): Oklahoma vs. No. 5 North Carolina – Monday, June 22 at 7:00 PM on ESPN
This is a big opportunity. Skip Johnson and this team have delivered.
Now it’s on the fans to show up and create an unforgettable environment for the championship series.
If you can get to Omaha, go.
