Sooners head coach Porter Moser is rebuilding the roster with experienced transfers and returning talent, which features a dynamic backcourt and versatile frontcourt that is taking shape

Oklahoma Sooners men's basketball is currently undergoing significant changes to their roster from last season under head coach Porter Moser.

As of late April 2026, 10 of the 15 scholarship spots are filled, with the program actively reshaping its lineup through a mix of returning talent, high-upside transfers, and developmental pieces.

While several key contributors from the previous campaign have moved on, the incoming players, particularly the transfers, bring experience, size, shooting, and versatility that could help the Sooners compete in the SEC.

Departures and Roster Context

Oklahoma bid farewell to several players via the transfer portal, including guard Jeff Nwankwo (to Youngstown State), forward Andreas Holst (to FIU), guard Jake Hansen, and forward Kuol Atak (to Virginia Tech).

These exits, combined with graduations, created openings, especially in the frontcourt and backcourt depth. The Sooners finished the prior season with 21 wins and a strong showing in the College Basketball Crown, but Moser and his staff have focused on portal additions to address size, perimeter scoring, and interior presence.

The current projected roster blends holdovers with new faces:

G Xzayvier Brown (6-2, senior): A cornerstone returner. Brown started all 37 games last season after transferring from Saint Joseph's, averaging 15.4 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 45.6% from the field and 34.3% from three. His playmaking, scoring, and defensive instincts make him a leader in the backcourt.

F Derrion Reid (6-8, junior): Another key returnee with upside. The former Alabama transfer and five-star prospect started all 37 games last year, contributing around 11-12 points and 4+ rebounds per game with versatile forward skills.

G Dayton Forsythe (6-2, junior): A local product from Dale, Oklahoma, providing depth and familiarity in the guard rotation.

F/C Kai Rogers (6-10, sophomore): The former four-star recruit from Overtime Elite adds length and athleticism in the frontcourt as he continues to develop.

F Finley Keeffe (6-7, redshirt freshman) and F Gage Mayfield (6-8, freshman): Young forwards expected to contribute depth and potential energy.

Spotlight on Newcomers: Transfer Portal Additions

The real story for 2026-27 lies in the fresh talent entering Norman, particularly the transfers who bring immediate experience and skill sets tailored to SEC competition.

G Pop Isaacs (6-2, redshirt senior) arrives from Texas A&M as a battle-tested veteran. Isaacs has played for Texas Tech, Creighton, and the Aggies, logging over 100 career games with significant starting experience.

He earned Third Team All-Big 12 honors at Texas Tech and is known as a dangerous sharpshooter from beyond the arc.

His scoring (career averages near 13 points) and playmaking will pair well with Brown's facilitation, giving Oklahoma a more dynamic and experienced backcourt. Isaacs' journey through multiple high-major programs suggests adaptability and a hunger for a bigger role in Norman.

F Khani Rooths (6-10, junior) committed from Louisville early in the portal window. The athletic 6-10 forward provides much-needed size and versatility on the wing/frontcourt.

With two years of eligibility remaining, Rooths brings athleticism, rebounding, and the ability to stretch the floor or defend multiple positions. His addition helps offset the loss of frontcourt pieces and gives Moser a mobile big who can impact both ends.

G Tyler Hendricks (6-6, senior) comes from Utah Valley after previous time at UCF. At 6-6, he offers positional size for a guard, allowing flexibility in lineups.

Hendricks is expected to compete for minutes alongside Brown, Forsythe, and Isaacs, bringing perimeter scoring and defensive length to the backcourt. His Power conference experience (from UCF) should help him transition quickly to the SEC grind.

F/C Akoldah Gak (6-11) represents one of the more intriguing additions. The 23-year-old South Sudanese-Australian big man played professionally in Australia before signing an Exhibit 10 deal with the Washington Wizards and seeing action with the Capital City Go-Go in the G League (averaging 7.5 points and 3.7 rebounds on efficient shooting).

As the nephew of former OU player Longar Longar, Gak brings professional-level size, mobility, and experience. At 6-11, he projects as a potential starting center, providing rim protection, rebounding, and a physical presence that was sometimes lacking. His G League seasoning could accelerate his impact in college.

Young Talent and Outlook

The incoming freshmen and redshirt players round out the group. Gage Mayfield, a freshman forward, adds another long-term building block.

Combined with returners like Kai Rogers and Finley Keeffe, Oklahoma maintains youth and athleticism up front while the veteran transfers provide leadership.

With five scholarship spots still open, Moser has flexibility to target additional depth—perhaps more perimeter shooting or another big.

The new players address key needs: backcourt scoring and experience (Isaacs, Hendricks), frontcourt length and athleticism (Rooths, Gak), while the holdovers (Brown, Reid, Forsythe, Rogers) offer continuity.

The mix of proven scorers, size, and developmental pieces positions the Sooners to push for NCAA Tournament relevance in a loaded SEC. Success will depend on chemistry development, health, and how quickly the newcomers mesh with the returning core.
