By pairing Brent Venables’ defensive steel with a resilient, doubted gunslinger, the Sooners could reclaim their status as college football’s premier quarterback factory in 2026

J.D. PicKell dropped some strong praise for Oklahoma and John Mateer recently, and I think he’s onto something big.

PicKell believes that Mateer’s performance in 2026 could completely change the trajectory of the program long-term.

Here’s what he had to say: "If Oklahoma can get back to their ways, I think it would be scary for the rest of college football and I think it would shake up the entire sport, which hinges then, on what John Mateer does this year in 2026."

He continued: "I really believe that John Mateer has that trait that most great competitors have where, when the chips are stacked, and there is a certain amount of disbelief, he plays his best. That was John Mateer's entire career arc... Doubted his whole life. Always too small. Always too much of a gunslinger... Like he's always been this kind of like doubted guy, and I think that continuing into this upcoming season after what last year was after I think in glimpses he proved to himself, 'No, no, I can hang here.' I really believe that's going to bode well for him over the course of 2026 and I think he is going to pick up where he left off when he was healthy in the month of September."

PicKell also touched on something really interesting about the culture in Norman: "I think what's kind of unique about Oklahoma is the personality that they have at the head coaching position for them in Norman, it doesn't always align itself with having great quarterback play. Now, what do I mean by that? Typically, these quarterback guys... usually they are former quarterbacks themselves or they are offensive-minded guys... So when you're a quarterback guy, I believe it's really tricky to strike that balance of having a great quarterback, majoring on offense while also being consistent on defense... My point in all this is I think that with Brent Venables being a defensive guy, if Oklahoma as the place becomes an attractive spot for quarterbacks, that formula will be really, really difficult to not sustain because of who Brent Venables is on defense and because of what Oklahoma attracts at the quarterback spot. And again, those two things, I think you're set up for a very long time in modern college football."

PicKell is spot on here.

No school in college football has a better track record at producing and developing quarterbacks than Oklahoma.

The list is ridiculous: Josh Heupel, Jason White, Sam Bradford, Landry Jones, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Spencer Rattler, Caleb Williams, Dillon Gabriel.

That’s Heisman winners, first-round picks, and legends.

Norman has always been a QB-friendly place.

What makes this different now is that Oklahoma finally has something it didn’t always have during those great QB eras, an elite defense.

Brent Venables has built a unit that can compete with anybody in the SEC on a weekly basis. If you pair that defensive consistency with high-level quarterback play, you’ve got the perfect formula for sustained success.

If John Mateer can play at a Heisman level all season like he showed before the injury last year, who is really stopping this team?

The offense has the weapons with Isaiah Sategna, Parker Livingstone, Trell Harris, and others. The offensive line is improving, the run game should be better, and the defense is going to keep them in every game.

Mateer doesn’t even have to be a superhero every week. If he just limits mistakes, takes care of the ball, and manages the game, OU can contend for the SEC Championship and make the playoff.

If he plays elite? This team can win a national title.

The long-term point PicKell is making is huge. If Mateer has a big year and shows that Norman is still QB U, more top quarterbacks will want to come here.

Combine that with Venables’ defensive identity and you’ve got the perfect mix for yearly contention in the SEC and College Football Playoff. That’s exactly how you build a modern powerhouse.

This feels like a pivotal year.

Mateer has already proven he belongs. Now it’s about staying healthy and building on what he showed in September last year.

The supporting cast is better, the coaching staff is more experienced, and the belief is growing in Norman.

I’m buying what PicKell is selling. If Mateer balls out in 2026, it could spark something special that lasts for years.

Oklahoma has the tradition, the resources, the defense, and now potentially the quarterback to be scary again.

The rest of the SEC better pay attention.

Norman might be becoming QB destination central once more.
