This week on The Jones Report, Roundtable Sooners publisher Tyler Jones and Roundtable OkState editor Thomas Bridges give their insights on everything happening in the Big 12 and SEC.
With the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys both on bye weeks, the guys take a moment to dissect everything around them in their respective conferences. In the SEC, we have reaction to the first College Football Playoff rankings of the year.
The Sooners come in at the No. 12 spot. Jones feels that the ranking is fair for Oklahoma but believes that, right now, their only path to the CFP is by winning out and going 10-2.
Also, what’s next for the Auburn Tigers after moving on from Hugh Freeze? Freeze had a disappointing tenure at Auburn, and while the Tigers have money, this is a program that has traditionally been behind its in-state rival, Alabama.
Jones believes the name to watch for the Auburn head coaching job is Tulane’s Jon Sumrall. Sumrall has had an impressive run at Tulane and has ties to the Tigers’ athletic director, John Cohen.
Meanwhile, in the Big 12, there is a huge game this week between BYU and Texas Tech. Both teams have aspirations to make the College Football Playoff, and it could be a preview of the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington next month.
The game features two really good quarterbacks in BYU’s Bear Bachmeier and Texas Tech’s Behren Morton. While the game is an early kickoff, the crowd will be rocking. Bridges and Jones believe it will be tough for the Cougars to win in a road environment like Lubbock.
For the second straight week, College GameDay visits a Big 12 school with its trip to West Texas. Jones also emphasizes how big it is for the league, as well as these two schools, to have this kind of spotlight in a top-10 battle.
As the coaching carousel is already in full swing, one name to keep an eye on is Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham. Earlier this week, he reaffirmed his commitment to staying at his alma mater as head coach. The guys believe that is the right decision for now but add that he could still be a name to watch down the road.
Also on the show, Jones and Bridges discuss the latest happenings in the NFL and the rest of college football as KLKC Kansas City Chiefs insider Darren Smith joins the program.
