Once a high-stakes bet, the Ducks quarterback faces a career-defining crossroads at USC as analysts question his mental toughness following a devastating postseason collapse against Indiana.
Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore took a big bet on himself in the offseason when he chose to forgo the 2026 NFL Draft to return to Eugene.
It remains to be seen if Moore can make a turnaround to prove that the risk was a success. Through the first three games, Moore has completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 849 yards and nine touchdowns. He's subtracted 17 yards on the ground.
Moore guided Oregon to a close seven-point win over Boise State at home in Week 1. But he had no heroics in the Ducks' 39-31 loss to Oklahoma State in Week 2. Frankly, who cares what Moore or Oregon did against Portland State?
Moore has a chance to change the narrative when the No. 20 Ducks travel to play No. 12 USC on Saturday night. The young quarterback returned to Oregon in part so he could show growth at playing in big games.
Given the start to the Ducks season, their game against the Trojans is crucial if they want to stay in the College Football Playoff conversation, which was thought to be the bare minimum expiation for a school that had hopes of winning its first national championship.
During "Josh Pate's College Football Show" this week, the host had harsh words for how Moore has started the season. He noted the quarterback has not been the same since he was rocked by Indiana in the CFP semifinal in January.
"I'm also scared that Dante Moore, post-Indiana game, is like a shell of himself and what he could be, and I can't snap him out of it, and he is not the only problem on this team right now," Pate said. "It's not like everything else is like a well-oiled machine; we're just waiting for the quarterback piece to fall into place."
Moore doesn't look the same, and part of that could be the offensive line, but Moore dealt with similar issues last season.
The Ducks will be down Jeremiah McClellan after the wide receiver suffered a foot injury in warmups before the Portland State beatdown on Friday night. That won't help Moore's cause, but Oregon has way too many weapons for that to be an excuse.
Big showdown between Dante Moore and Jayden Maiava
Maiava is ascending in the early season. His duel with Moore could determine the outcome of Saturday's game.
Last year, Maiava threw for 306 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. Those interceptions killed USC in its 42-27 loss to the Ducks.
Moore didn't play his best game, but did enough, throwing for 257 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
The quarterback who plays the most cleanly should emerge the winner in this contest. For Moore, it would be a sign that he's made some improvement since January.
