Former Oregon CB Christian Gonzalez Makes Bold Statement After Super Bowl

Former Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez was the best player on the field for the New England Patriots in Sunday's Super Bowl.

While the Patriots cornerback made several pass breakups to limit the Seattle Seahawks to field goals in the first three quarters, his offense couldn't do enough to keep the game close in a runaway fourth quarter.

Gonzalez finished with four total tackles and three passes defensed in the 29-16 loss to Seattle in Santa Clara, California.

Gonzalez, a 2023 first-round pick by New England, made significant progress in his third season in the league.

The former Ducks cornerback finished the regular season with a career-high 69 total tackles and 10 passes defensed in 14 games played, earning his first Pro Bowl nomination.

(Gonzalez earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024.)

During his postgame news conference, Gonzalez made a bold statement about his plans for 2026, hoping to become more of a leader in the locker room.

"I've been trying to find my voice, find my leadership--how I can lead," he said, via the Patriots. "And everybody knows, I'm not much of a, gather the team up and give them a speech, but just finding ways to try to lead.

"(Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel) has been, been helping me with that, talking to me about it, and, just trying to be a leader, trying to grow, obviously, on the field and but, but also off the field as as a man, as somebody that people can look to on this team."

Gonzalez was a part of losing seasons in his first two season in the league under head coaches Bill Belichick and Jerod Mayo. He's proud of the way the Patriots made a turnaround under Vrabel in his first season.

"Proud of just the team in general," Gonzalez said. "All year was, nobody believed in us. Nobody thought we were going to be anything and I mean, to make it to where we were is a testament to our work, and we came up short.

"Every year, a team loses the Super Bowl. Team has been here before. It's not the end of the world, like I said, it's stings, but proud of the guys and get right back to it."

Gonzalez could earn a pay raise after the Pro Bowl nomination. The bump in salary could come with the expectation that he's more of a vocal leader for the Patriots.
