It has been a rough NFL season for former Oregon star Justin Herbert.
Former Oregon star Justin Herbert got a brutal NFL quarterback ranking from FOX Sports.
Herbert is ranked No. 29.
The Los Angeles Chargers are 0-6 and the Dallas Cowboys have never made the NFC Championship Game with Dak Prescott.
That's why former NFL QB Boomer Esiason suggested that the Cowboys trade Prescott to the Chargers for Herbert.
Herbert is having a horrible season. He has eight interceptions and only five touchdown passes. The former Oregon star has 1,141 passing yards and he's completing only 59.4% of his passes.
Since the Chargers will miss the playoffs this season, NFL execs believe the front office should hold a fire sale and trade Herbert, Khalil Mack and Derwin James Jr.
The Cowboys should move on from Prescott sooner rather than later. After all, Prescott has never led Dallas to the promised land and he's 33.
Meanwhile, Herbert is only 28 and a change of scenery could unlock his talent.
Herbert spent four seasons at Oregon. In 44 games, the gunslinger put up 10,541 passing yards and 95 passing touchdowns.
The Chargers selected Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Herbert is a two-time Pro Bowler and won the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He entered this NFL season as an MVP candidate, but Herbert and the Chargers have been a walking disaster from the start.
Los Angeles signed Herbert to a massive five-year, $262 million extension in 2023. We all know Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likes to make big splashes. There would be no bigger splash than trading for Herbert, who is still considered an elite QB despite his struggles this season.
Herbert entered this season with 24,820 career passing yards and 163 passing touchdowns. Those are stellar numbers. For whatever reason, Herbert and new Chargers OC Mike McDaniel have not worked well together.
The odds of the Chargers trading Herbert are very, very low. However, the idea Esiason floated makes a lot of sense.
The 2026 NFL trade deadline is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. ET. After this time, teams will no longer be allowed to execute trades until the 2027 league year officially begins in March.
Oregon fans don't expect Herbert to be on a new team this season. They do, however, want to see Herbert play well again.
For that second part to happen, Herbert may have to play for another team, so maybe he should request a trade from the Chargers this offseason and control his future like so many superstars in other sports do.
