FOX Sports' Joel Klatt recently suggested that the Oregon Ducks should schedule a rematch against head coach Dan Lanning's former team in the future.
With all the rumors surrounding the potential expansion to the College Football Playoffs, there’s a good chance that Oregon Ducks fans could see more high-powered programs make it onto the team’s schedule in the near future.
When discussing future college football games that he wants to see, FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt floated the idea of Oregon rekindling their matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs as one potential regular-season game.
“Kirby’s got to go face Dan Lanning in Autzen Stadium. Yes, I’m in on that,” Klatt stated. “Remember, Lanning’s first game as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks was against Georgia? I believe that one was in Atlanta in 2022, and Georgia just beat them up 49-3. I’d love to see Kirby go up and face his former assistant, his former defensive coordinator.”
Could Oregon Play Georgia Again in the Near Future?

During his three years with the SEC powerhouse, the former highly-touted coordinator played a massive role in the team’s National Championship run in 2021, as the defense allowed an average of 268.5 offensive yards and 78.9 rushing yards per game.
However, upon his arrival in Eugene, Lanning was tasked not only to revamp the previous roster under former head coach Mario Cristobal, but to face off against his former apprentice in Kirby Smart and Georgia in Week One of the 2022 college football season. This resulted in a brutal 49-3 defeat for Oregon, with legendary Ducks’ quarterback Bo Nix throwing for 173 yards and two interceptions in his first-ever start with the program.
Now, with Lanning possessing a 26-3 record since joining the Big 10 Conference back in 2024, the once-struggling program is more equipped to square off against the Bulldogs in the near future.
To make matters more interesting, the possibility of this potential showdown could begin to pick up more steam with the talks surrounding more expansion to the College Football Playoffs, as a regular-season loss would not take Oregon out of the playoff conversation.
