The Oregon Ducks will hold an open competition this week for the quarterback position if Dante Moore cannot go.
If Dante Moore is unable to go, Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks will hold an open quarterback competition ahead of their matchup with the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday.
Now, the storylines are obviously there for Dylan Raiola. He had the opportunity last week to grab hold of the Oregon starting quarterback position against UCLA; instead, he threw out one of the worst performances of all time for a quarterback.
He was so bad that he was benched in favor of Brock Thomas, who nearly brought the Ducks back for a crazy win in one of the most bizarre college football games in a long while.
Lanning said that he will hold basically a quarterback competition throughout the practice week to see who is going to lead the Ducks onto the field against the Cornhuskers on Saturday.
This is just simply not the place that the Ducks wanted to be when they started this season. When you think of this season turning into a nightmare, what has happened up to this point might be worse than your worst dream.
Having to battle against Boise State before getting your doors blown off by Oklahoma State was not an ideal start to the year. Then, to compound that, Dante Moore taking one of the biggest cheap shots that you will see at the point when he started to play better football was even more of a disaster. Then, the cherry on top was whatever the heck happened on Saturday against UCLA.
Seven turnovers, two interceptions, and five fumbles by Oregon in a two-point loss are ones that you can just shake your head at.
Now, the midyear quarterback competition is in play, which is a complete disaster. Raiola and Thomas will go set for set this week during practice to determine who will take the keys to the car.
Having to do this feels like a waste of time already, and then it is nearly impossible for anyone on the team to build any confidence at all throughout the week. The goal of a good week of practice is to build momentum towards the game.
When your two quarterbacks are competing for that, but also competing to just play is a disaster, but that is where the Ducks are at.
This is definitely a low point for Lanning, for the Ducks, and for this program as a whole. They had full and rightful intentions of being a National Championship contender this year. Now, they are having a mid-season quarterback competition.
It's going to be a long year out in Eugene.
