Can Oregon's proven roster overcome coaching shortcomings and a brutal schedule to finally win a national championship? The Ducks face their ultimate test in 2026.
The Oregon Ducks have made significant progress in each of the last two years under head coach Dan Lanning.
The Ducks won the Big Ten championship in 2024. However, they were blown out in a loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal.
In 2025, Oregon won its first two CFP games under Lanning by dominating James Madison at home and blanking Texas Tech 23-0 thanks to a stifling defensive effort in the quarterfinal round at the Orange Bowl.
All of the Ducks flaws were exposed by Indiana in a 56-22 beatdown in the CFP semifinal at the Peach Bowl.
Bill Connelly of ESPN argues that Oregon has one of the more proven rosters in college football. He's curious if this team will have enough juice to win the national championship.
"There are plenty of caveats you can add here," Connelly wrote of how the Ducks were exposed in the Peach Bowl. "Oregon had a pair of coordinators who had taken head coaching jobs and were working double-duty during Peach Bowl prep, for instance.
"But it's easy for unfair narratives to form and take on a life of their own, and the Ducks will have to navigate a tricky schedule, with road trips to USC and Ohio State and visits from Michigan and Washington while also knowing that they need to save fifth gear for December and January, especially in the trenches. Can they stick the landing this time?"
Or can Lanning stick the landing?
Those are going to be questions the Ducks will face until they can learn not be blown out in the CFP. Frankly, it's up to Lanning to figure out a way to keep that from happening.
Oregon lost to Indiana because Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti and his staff outperformed Lanning and his staff. It wasn't Indiana's overwhelming talent that made a 34-point lopsided result happen.
With Dante Moore, a loaded backfield and deep receiver corps, the Ducks need to be able to compete with any defense in the country, as long as the offensive line is manageable.
The defense should be better this year.
The ultimate test comes down to how much better is Lanning?
