While Steve Sarkisian swaps talent to chase titles, Dan Lanning bets on expensive roster retention, prioritizing continuity and system experience to fuel Oregon’s national championship pursuit.
Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has a roster capable of winning the College Football Playoff national championship this year not only because of talent, but because of the experience his talented players have working in his system.
Oregon made a concerted effort to bring back quarterback Dante Moore and several players on the defense in the hopes of winning the championship. That meant paying players that a chance to make big bucks in the league or at a rival college program.
During the Big Ten Media Days in Chicago on Wednesday, Lanning told reporters that roster retention is one of the most expensive parts of his roster building, but he thinks it makes more sense in the long run,
“Some of the most spending that occurs right now in building a roster is roster retention,” Lanning said, via On3. “If you ask any coach – at least for me, personally, I would much rather keep a good player in my program that I think is going to be a good player in the future, than see them go somewhere else because they can get paid more [somewhere] else.
"I think we would all agree the amount of players in the portal is not necessarily a great thing for the sport. The more you can retain the guys that are on your current roster, I think that helps. Does it create a little more of a challenge for programs? Absolutely. Is that a necessary challenge? Absolutely.”
Lanning's comments stand in direct contrast to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, who told reporters during the SEC Media Days last week that he had to let four players go from his 2025 roster to bring in Cam Coleman and Hollywood Smothers.
Sarkisian thinks those moves were savvy, allowing the Longhorns to bring in elite talent to chase a national championship.
The two different philosophies could wind up meeting the national championship this year. Texas and Oregon have two of the top 5 rosters in the country.
Will experience in a system overcome sheer talent?
It's a question to ask Lanning during the next offseason.
