Oregon Receives Shocking Outlook For Week 9 Matchup vs Northwestern
Oct 26, 2026 4:24 PM

Despite a midseason collapse and a coordinator firing, the struggling Ducks open as betting favorites against a surging, ranked Northwestern squad led by an explosive Chip Kelly offense.

Are the Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning due for a bounce-back victory in Week 9 against the Northwestern Wildcats?

After being one of the top programs entering the 2026 college football season, Lanning and the Ducks had a dramatic fall from grace, posting a 4-3 record through the team’s first seven games. Star quarterback Dante Moore suffered a brutal head injury early in the season against the USC Trojans, which led to a complete downward spiral without him on the field.

However, there is hope that the struggling program could turn the season around this weekend.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook on Monday morning, the Ducks enter their Week 9 contest against the No. 20-ranked Wildcats as -3.5 point favorites at home.

Before the 2026 college football season began, many fans saw Oregon’s upcoming matchup as the perfect “tune-up” prior to taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus the following week. Clearly, this is not the case anymore, as Lanning and his squad must encounter two top-25 programs over the next two weeks.

Led by head coach David Braun, the Wildcats are 6-1 this season while riding into Saturday’s contest with a four-game winning streak. During that stretch, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and his unit averaged 36.3 points per game, thanks to a lethal one-two punch between quarterback Aidan Chiles and running back Caleb Komolafe.

Chiles has quickly become one of the hottest quarterbacks in the Big 10 Conference after transferring from Michigan State this past offseason. The senior quarterback threw for 1,617 yards and 12 touchdowns to one interception in seven games. As for Komolafe, the junior rusher continues to thrive in Kelly’s offense, tallying 551 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 88 attempts.

Northwestern’s efficient offense will pose a tough challenge for Oregon in Week 9. While facing the Illinois Fighting Illini last week, the defense allowed a total of 21 points to backup quarterback Mark Clayton and senior running back Aidan Laughery. Clayton accounted for two of the three touchdowns on 89 passing yards, while Laughery tallied 123 rushing yards and one touchdown on 13 carries.

In order for the Ducks to avoid their fourth loss of the season this weekend, the defense must be the catalyst against Northwestern. Oregon announced on Sunday that the program will be moving on from offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer after scoring 17 or fewer points over the last three contests.
