Seeking an NFL draft surge, All-American safety Koi Perich trades Minnesota for Eugene to master a championship playbook and unleash his versatility as the Ducks' newest defensive anchor.
Koi Perich was an immediate revelation at Minnesota, earning second-team All-American honors during his first season with the Golden Gophers in 2024.
In 2025, the Gophers finished with an 8–5 record. Like Dillon Thieneman did before the 2025 season, Perich decided he wanted to elevate his game before going to the league. Perich transferred to Oregon and will take over the spot Thiememan left behind this offseason.
Earlier this week, Perich told reporters he needed to make a change, wanting to push himself harder this year.
“I just knew I needed a change," Perich said, via USA Today. "I knew I needed to prepare myself a little bit better than I did last season, last off-season. So just attacking each and every day, and obviously my teammates were able to help me with that.
"Just being able to lean on them, and also them just helping me throughout that whole process. Like when they're giving 100%, I see that. ‘Oh, let me go give a little more.’ Just makes it easy when you got a bunch of guys just willing to come out each and every day with an attack mindset, and it's very fun."
Perich believes the defense is making leaps this summer. The unit communicates through hand signals. The junior safety has come to master the playbook during training camp.
“These past few days, even these past few weeks, I've definitely learned my way around this playbook," Perich said. "I feel like I've handled myself with a level of maturity throughout the whole time learning it, learning from my mistakes throughout spring ball, fall camp, summer. Just keep on growing throughout that."
Perich offers Oregon a dynamic that Thieneman, skilled as he was, did not. He can be a returner on special teams and can play receiver in a pinch.
Thieneman came to Oregon to become a better tackler and defender. He wound up going to the Chicago Bears in the first round of the year's draft.
Perich could see his draft stock rise if he takes the next step on a defense that has the potential to win a championship.
