There's a ton of respect for both sides.
On Wednesday, the University of Oregon announced that head basketball coach Dana Altman has retired. Altman, who spent 16 seasons with the program, won 382 games and did a lot of good for the university.
While the news was disappointing to hear this late in the college basketball cycle, with the season set to begin in less than a month, he decided to do what was best for him, and we can't fault him for doing so.
In this era of NIL and kids doing what's best for them, people doing what they believe is right should be viewed as more than fair.
As for how this impacts Oregon's basketball program, it'll be interesting to see whether it can find any success.
Oregon seemed to have a decent roster, but it definitely wasn't one of the better ones in the Big Ten.
It was also great to hear the praise Altman received from other coaches at the university, reporters, and people around the country.
Speaking about that recently, Oregon's head football coach Dan Lanning wanted to show his appreciation and said that he was a great mentor for the school and its players, and that he is ultimately a Hall of Fame head coach.
“A lot of things come to mind immediately when I hear that one,” Lanning said, per Oregon Live.
“I’m just happy for him and (Altman’s wife) Reva, and their opportunity to spend some time with grandbabies. I know that’s something that means the world to him, and I think about the impact he’s had on me as a coach personally. A great mentor, sees the game, and obviously a Hall of Fame coach with what he’s been able to accomplish. I love his story, and how grounded he is, and he’s as good as they come.”
Lanning and his football program will face one of their tougher games of the season on Saturday, taking on a strong UCLA team.
There should be some sort of tribute for Altman as the Ducks will play at home against UCLA. Fans will have a warm Oregon thank you to him and it'll be an awesome moment for all involved.
