In college athletics, most of the time, football is king. Some schools, like Duke or North Carolina, could argue that the title belongs to basketball, but it rarely goes to any other sport on campus.
This partially makes sense, as depending on the school, one of those two sports will bring in the majority of revenue for the entire athletic program, but often, we let that cloud our view of other teams representing the very same school.
The University of Oregon and its fans do a better job than most of acknowledging that they house some of the best teams in the nation across multiple sports. That was very much the case this weekend.
While the national media was mainly focused on the Ducks that stole the show at the NFL Combine, many other teams donning green and yellow silently dominated the weekend.
The Big-10 Indoor Track and Field Championships took place this weekend, and the Men's and Women's did not disappoint. For the second straight year, both men's and women's teams swept the event on their way to becoming Big-10 Champs.
When you look at the University of Oregon, its ties to track and field will forever be tight. Legendary University of Oregon alumnus and Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman started Blue Ribbon Sports (later becoming Nike) with his waffle-soled shoes designed for the Ducks track and field team he coached in the 1960s.
Bowerman would be pleased to see his beloved Oregon Track and Field teams still at the top of their game.
This weekend, the Oregon baseball team traveled to Sin City to take part in the Live Like Lou Las Vegas Classic. The Ducks came out of the tournament as champions, but this had some confused.
Three teams finished the tournament 2-1: Oregon, Arizona, and UC Irvine. While Oregon and Arizona were tied with a +5 run differential, the tiebreaker in this tournament was determined by run differential against common opponents.
What wasn't confusing was how good Oregon's team looked, and the tournament took notice. Eight of the eleven total players selected to the All-Tournament team were Oregon Ducks. Quite a successful weekend for the boys.
The No. 20-ranked Ducks softball team did their thing this weekend and extended their winning streak to 6 straight games as they handled the Oregon Classic with ease.
In their final game, they won 18-2 in just five innings as they crushed Samford en route to a run-rule victory. The next time the team takes the field, they'll be matching up against Oregon State, which has lost four straight.
At the NFL combine this weekend, players like TE Kenyon Sadiq and S Dillon Thieneman stole headlines, but the rest of Oregon's athletics certainly deserved some shine of their own after this weekend's accomplishments.
Ducks Roundtable also offers a fan community and message board. We’d love to have you join us to talk all things Oregon Ducks. Click the “Join” button at the top of the page to join our community for free.
