The Oregon Ducks have put themselves into a spot that they absolutely must win on Staurday afternoon against the UCLA Bruins.
Thanks to their loss against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Ducks have just a 39 percent chance to make the College Football Playoffs, and their schedule going forward is a big reason why.
Not only do they have this marquee matchup against UCLA, but they have huge games against Northwestern and Ohio State to end the season. If they go undefeated the rest of the way, it is likely that they will be a top-four seed in the tournament and get a bye week.
However, there are plenty of reasons to believe that they wouldn't be able to do that. In every one of their games so far, the Ducks' defense has left a lot to be desired. They have given up at least 27 points to each of their opponents except Portland State, whom they beat 84-0.
Success has clues, but so does failure, and the Ducks have a very long way to go to be considered one of the best teams in the country.
The first step in that process is beating the UCLA Bruins on Saturday. If it were one of the past 10 years, this game would be a foregone conclusion. Instead, the 2026 version of the UCLA Bruins is a very legit group and a team that commands attention and respect.
The Bruins come into the game on Saturday with a perfect 4-0 record, ranked No. 21 in the country. They do a lot of things right, and they play extremely hard, which makes them nearly impossible to beat. The turnaround that Bob Chesney has orchestrated has been nothing short of spectacular, and they are playing that way.
Oregon is between a rock and a hard place. They have to show up; their postseason lives depend on it, and as much as I don't want to say this in Week 5, this is a must-win for the Oregon program.
If Oregon wants to get where they want to go, they cannot slip up against the UCLA Bruins; it is as simple as that. One more loss against an inferior opponent will put the nail in the coffin for this season.
The reverse is also true, UCLA is a quality enough opponent that a win against them can catapult them back into the top-10 and allow them to stay alive for the rest of the season.
