Being a rookie quarterback in the NFL and not being one of the first few picks in the draft typically doesn't end as well as many players hope. For former Penn State star Drew Allar, he has a lot to prove with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and there's a very good chance that he has a short time to do so.
If Allar doesn't come out and show the Steelers why their decision to select him in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft was the right one, there's a very, very good chance we won't see the young man end up playing too much in the NFL, at least in a Steelers jersey.
That's what makes a lot of this talk about the Steelers potentially being interested in quarterback Brendan Sorsby interesting. Sorsby, who definitely has his off-the-field issues after the whole gambling situation, is a very talented player, and there's absolutely no denying that. The Steelers will have to determine whether they're actually interested in him or don't want to deal with some of the backlash of landing him.
Sorsby is in a weird spot because of the news on Tuesday, but reports say he plans on going back on what the NFL has decided on, so let’s say that happens.
Reports indicate there is some interest, but it was also noted that this could impact guys like Allar.
"You have to figure out. Does that mean they're out on Will Howard, or they don't care as much about Drew Allar?" analyst Steve Palazzolo asked Friday on 93.7 The Fan's The PM Team, H/T Steelers Depot. "I mean, Sorsby's probably a slightly better prospect than Allar because he played better football on the field. Doesn't maybe have as good of an arm but is a better runner and has better tools. I think Howard probably played better football than both of those guys, but with a great supporting cast at Ohio State his final season."
I don't know if Sorsby is a better prospect than Allar, as I also think it's important to recognize that over the past year, there were points when Allar was viewed as one of the best prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Obviously, he didn't play that well during his few games at Penn State a year ago before going down, but he was viewed as an elite, elite prospect.
Only time will tell what happens, but it feels like something good could happen in the near future.
