Drew Allar's Penn State Issues Being Viewed as Reality for Steelers

If you ask Penn State fans how they feel about Drew Allar, most are rather indifferent about his play. 

There are some who believe he was very good at times, and others who believe he just wasn't what the Nittany Lions were expecting. Unfortunately, it's only fair to suggest that Allar wasn't the guy that Penn State was hoping for every single week.

Not that college quarterbacks are the most consistent players in the world, but he definitely needed to be more consistent in multiple ways, and as a result, his future in the NFL definitely has some question marks because of what he did at Penn State.

On the flip side, Allar has all the tools to not only be a decent NFL player, but a very good one in the long term, which has led many to really be excited about his future, but still bring up some of his problems at Penn State.

“At 6-foot-5 with a wide arm span and nearly 10-inch hands, Allar possesses the raw traits McCarthy looks for in his West Coast-style quarterbacks. And as a three-year starter at Penn State with 61 career touchdowns and 7,402 career passing yards, Allar has the pedigree to be a top-tier signal-caller. But despite his measurables and a background playing premium college football, Allar's mechanics need work to make him a more consistent player.

“With the Nittany Lions, he posted a 1-6 career record against AP Top 10 opponents, completing just 50.3% of pass attempts at 5.5 yards per attempt. Meanwhile, he went 25-3 against all other opponents and completed 67% of attempts at 8 yards per attempt. That's why the top priority for Allar is similar to what McCarthy focused on with Howard in the first phase of the offseason training: footwork. It's McCarthy's first step, no pun intended, in helping Allar transition to a Steelers system where he'll play more under center than at any other point in his career,” Brooke Pryor of ESPN wrote.

Everybody knows that Penn State and Allar didn't do what they had to do against top teams during his time in Happy Valley. 

That was the biggest problem for Penn State, and the reason why its head coach, James Franklin, was fired. 

Allar definitely has the tools to be a stud, but he's going to have to prove a lot during his time in Pittsburgh, as the Steelers are definitely hopeful that he's going to progress and develop in a way that they expect him to.
