He didn't mean any harm.
Matt Campbell of Penn State isn't exactly in a great position to comment right now, especially on teams like the University of Texas and Ohio State.
Texas is one thing, even though there's an argument that it's the best team in America, but saying anything about Ohio State, given what it's done over the past few years, just seems ridiculous.
Whenever Penn State mentions the Buckeyes, Ohio State fans have an easy response. The programs haven't been comparable in recent seasons, as much as that hurts to say.
As for what Campbell recently said in a leaked video while speaking to recruits, his comments about Ohio State and Texas didn't really upset me.
In fact, I think he said the right thing, and people are taking it out of context. If Campbell had said his team is better than those guys and talked smack about the programs, I'd have a problem.
However, for him to simply say that State College is a lot different from Austin, Texas, and Columbus, Ohio, is just a matter of fact.
"One of the really cool things that we have here is you're talking about one of the greatest communities in all of college football sport," Campbell said, H/T Clutch Points.
"Now, this is College Football Town, USA. We are not living in Austin, Texas, or Columbus, Ohio, where you're just part of it. We are it. "So how you move, how you carry yourself. Man, everywhere our guys go, everybody knows who they are. For some people, that's really good. For some people, hey, that's not how you want to live. But I'd rather be honest with you because if you use your platform to create real change, it's really, really powerful."
What Campbell is trying to say might not resonate with people who have never been to State College, Pennsylvania, but the harsh reality is that the entire economic system is literally built around the football program.
Without football, the city would be wildly different. I don't want to say that Austin and Columbus don't love their Buckeyes and Longhorns, but we're talking about two major cities in their respective states. This would be like if Penn State played in Philadelphia.
People may be frustrated that Campbell hasn't done much winning yet, but I'm also glad many Penn State fans backed him and believe he's the guy who'll turn this program around.
