Drew Allar has been one of the more polarizing quarterbacks heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, and a lot of it is due to frustrating reasons. There’s a clear difference between what he looks like on paper and what shows up on game day, at least in big moments.

There were times when Allar looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the country over the past few years. Even leading into last season, many thought he was the best QB in this upcoming draft. However, his tape, at times, wasn’t much to write home about.

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel summed it up perfectly and showed why many are frustrated with Allar, given all of his tools.

“Drew Allar, I mean, to me, like I really liked him two years ago,” Daniel said. “But he’s probably the most frustrating prospect I’ve watched in the past couple of years when you break down quarterback, because he has all the traits in the world. Like, you look at him just physically, and you would have said in 2024, ‘I mean, this is what I want my guy to be made of.’”

When a quarterback looks like this, the idea is that everything else is going to follow. However, for Allar, the gameplay has been far from that.

“Then you watch the film, and you’re like, ‘What are you doing?’ Like, there are these donut plays here and there that you’re just like, ‘Ah,’ and it shares a sentiment with some NFL teams I’ve talked to with it,” Daniel continued. “But like, if you have good coaching and if you feel really good about developing him, I’m not gonna say he’s gonna come in and play right away, but if you develop him, high-level backup…”

I don’t want to say he’s going to be a high-level backup because of how young he is and how great his tools are, but I don’t think Daniel had the worst take here, either. The reality is that Allar has shown us who he is and until he changes things up, we have to go based on what we saw.
