Pittsburgh Steelers legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is extremely nervous about what he is hearing from Steelers camp.
Former Pittsburgh legend Ben Roethlisberger knows a thing or two about having success in the NFL and success in Pittsburgh. What he is hearing out of Steelers' camp makes him "extremely nervous" about the development of quarterback Drew Allar.
Allar's career at Penn State can be classified as a disappointment. His first full season three years ago was his best. From there, things just got progressively worse until last year, when he had one of the all-time worst seasons in Penn State history.
However, he has all of the tools and traits to be a great NFL quarterback; he just needs some (or a lot) of work.
The reports that surfaced from western Pennsylvania were very concerning.
Basically, the Steelers came out and said that they are stripping Allar's mechanics and everything he knows about quarterbacking down to the studs and rebuilding him.
Okay, that doesn't sound all that bad if he was maybe still in college or was a high school prospect. Instead, he is in the NFL and was a third-round draft pick, with some of the people inside his new place of work believing that he is going to be the heir apparent to Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers gave the Steelers their first bit of stability at the quarterback position since they had Ben Roethlisberger over five years ago. While Roethlisberger is way removed from his playing days, he still stays close to the happenings inside the Pittsburgh building.
On Wednesday, Big Ben released a clip from his podcast, "Footbahlin," and his review of what is going on in Pittsburgh was not all that comforting.
He said that what is going on with Allar makes him "extremely nervous" because the things that they are teaching him are what he teaches young kids during his football camps.
It is an unfortunate and nervous review of what is going on with Allar. He has all of the tools to be a great quarterback in the NFL, but he just needs to take this reset very seriously.
He is not going to have a long leash when the job becomes his, and mechanically, he'd better be in a good spot before he sees live bullets on Sundays.
I don't totally disagree with Roethlisberger, but the one silver lining that I do see is that Allar has a year to figure it out. Simple as that. Aaron Rodgers has already said that he is hanging up the cleats after this year, and when he is gone, Allar will have the opportunity to take over.
If he isn't ready, then the former Nittany Lions' chance may pass him by. He has a little bit of time, but he had better get to work quickly.
