Penn State head coach Matt Campbell is not taking anything lightly or for granted with the opportunity at hand.
Penn State head coach Matt Campbell has done everything in his power to change the culture of the program that he inherited six months ago.
At the halfway mark, he was asked about how he felt about his first six months. His response was a little bit of coach speak mixed with a ton of truth:
"I would echo that we have one of the great opportunities of all time to continue to unify and align this tradition, on and off that field, that Penn State is about. We have made great headway, but we will continue to sprint to work every day to represent this program and its history every day."
It sounds to me like the team motto, or at least the message that Campbell reiterates daily, is how great an opportunity they have to turn this program around.
It is rare for a program like Penn State to open, and when the opportunity is presented, you have to take advantage of it and leave nothing to chance.
The payoff to finding success at a program like this is a lifelong home. Turning Penn State into a winner means there is a job for life, one that will never have to change.
The day that Penn State becomes a powerhouse again is the last day that Campbell will ever have to look for a job because he will be set for life.
For his players, the ones who are involved in turning this program into a legitimate powerhouse and contender will be legends in Happy Valley forever. It's simple, the opportunity is as good as it can be.
Because of what is in front of the Nittany Lions, they have to attack it every day. Not only do they have to attack it, but they need to do it with the mindset of representing the greatness that is Penn State Football.
Campbell is absolutely the perfect person to be leading this era of Penn State football. He is a tough coach from this area of the country who knows how to win in tough situations.
Penn State is by far and away the best program that he has inherited, and if history is set to repeat itself, there is some success coming to follow.
Campbell and the players are just six short weeks away from the beginning of their inaugural journey. It will be the most important weeks of their lives as they stare down one of the greatest opportunities of all time.
