No one has been a leader in Happy Valley.
Penn State football is having one of the most disappointing seasons in college football, and unfortunately, that doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon. Penn State enters this game against Purdue tied for second-to-last place in the Big Ten, with just five games remaining on its schedule.
Penn State will need to win three of those games to be bowl-eligible, though one could argue that nobody cares if the Nittany Lions end up in a bowl game.
It's not like Penn State has a chance to make the College Football Playoff or be in any decent bowl game.
Regardless, Penn State still has to play football, and many fans are going to be looking to Matt Campbell to figure some things out.
Campbell obviously hasn't done what anybody's been hoping for recently, and that's a major problem. However, when speaking to reporters, he keeps saying some interesting things.
He said his focus is on more than a win or loss, and while I get what he's trying to say, people in Happy Valley want this team to win. He can say whatever he wants beyond that, but the reality is that guys want to win, and until they do, there will be a lot of frustration.
“That’s really been our focus from day one. More than a win or a loss or talking about those end goals,” Campbell said Tuesday, per Onward State. “[End goals] always take care of themselves when you take care of yourself. And I think that’s really been our focus to be quite honest with you, really all season long…
“I still think leadership is not when it’s going great. Leadership is the ability to build culture, and when you’re not getting the results you want, identifying why you’re not getting them, but certainly not leaving the plan of how you want to build the team and what the expectations are in terms of standards and expectations,” he said.
He makes fair points again about leadership and how those attributes can be up in the air when things go south.
The problem is that he's not only disregarding how badly Penn State has played, but also ignoring that guys haven't stepped up as leaders since the program started losing at this level. Penn State has been absolutely brutal in recent weeks, and it doesn't feel like anybody on this roster is a leader. I hate to say it like that, but the reality is the reality.
