Penn State's 2027 recruiting class continues to slide pretty aggressively as they continue losing key recruits.
Penn State received some of the worst possible recruiting news on Tuesday afternoon. Their future star running back, Aiden Gibson, decommitted from PSU in favor of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
In a post, he said that even though he committed to the Nittany Lions, his "heart was always with Rutgers."
The news was devestating for the Penn State recruiting class that is starting to bleed a little bit from a class that was once legitimately one of the best in the country and is now at the bottom edge of the Top-25.
Gibson is from South Carolina, so it is not like he is staying close to home to go to Rutgers. Everything about this move seems fishy, but nonetheless, the decision has been made, and Gibson is headed to be a Scarlet Knight.
He is now the eighth recruit to officially decommit from Penn State in this cycle alone. He is definitely the best one, but he joins a group that includes three other four-star recruits and another five-star running back who changed their mind. The lone three-star decommit is the guy who felt like the biggest lock, and that was Semejay Robinson, who was all in on Penn State until Virginia dropped the bag for him.
Gibson's news came on the heels of Khalil Taylor disrespectfully committing to Nebraska after tossing the Penn State hat way off-screen and putting on the Nebraska lid.
It has been a very odd stretch for Matt Campbell and the Nittany Lions as they are gripping the wheel hard on making sure that they hold onto what used to be a very impressive class.
This is Campbell's first bit of adversity in his time as the head coach at Penn State, and truthfully, it was to be expected. There was a little bit here of "water finding its level" as he has some proving on the field to do before he can toss out one of the top classes in the country.
It is that and the fact that Penn State is fighting an uphill battle in terms of NIL. The fact that they are losing top-tier recruits to Rutgers, Virginia, and Nebraska is saying the quiet part out loud: they can't compete right now, financially.
It's the reality of the current state of college football and the reality of what Penn State is facing. One way to cure all of it is for them to win football games between the white lines, simple as that.
What was once the No. 6 recruiting class in the country is now the No. 24 class. Campbell needs football to start, and start as soon as possible.
