Penn State head coach Matt Campbell still believes that his quarterback Rocco Becht gives them the best chance to win football games.
No matter what Rocco Becht does at any point in his life, he is always going to have his head coach, Matt Campbell, in his corner.
The Penn State Nittany Lions are coming off of the much-needed bye week, and in that bye week, they spent a lot of their time taking a deep dive into the good and the bad from Rocco Becht this season. There has been some good in Becht's game to this point in the season, but the bad far outweighs it.
Meltdown losses to Wisconsin and Northwestern got their Big Ten play started, and then tough defeats at the hands of USC and Michigan have the Nittany Lions winless in Big Ten play to this point.
Becht has thrown for 1,664 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. He is completing nearly 63 percent of his passes. His stats are not all that bad, but in critical moments, he has made mistakes.
Regardless of it all, Penn State head coach Matt Campbell came out of the bye week saying that he is still very confident in his quarterback, Becht, and if you look around the country, what Becht is doing is good enough to win football games.
The only problem is that he is not.
At some point, a tough conversation has got to be had about the status of the Nittany Lions quarterback position. Not only is Becht playing below average football, but he is not going to be part of the future plans for the Nittany Lions.
This would be a perfect time to move off Becht and go to Alex Manske to find out what he has now and what he has planned for the Penn State program's future.
Campbell has been overly stubborn and committed to Becht at the quarterback position to the point of frustration. When he transferred from Iowa State to Penn State, there was some excitement, but in reality, he has been an average quarterback throughout his career.
He has continued that at Penn State and the reason that the Nittany Lions are winless in the Big Ten is because he has continued his average play at the quarterback position. It hasn't been good enough, but Matt Campbell will not move on from him.
If they do not get the job done against Purdue this weekend, there have to be changes. The reverse is also true: if they do get the job done against Purdue, he buys himself some time, but not much of it.
This is a lot of work left to do, and he has to get to a spot where he is not playing well enough to win; he is playing well enough, and the Nittany Lions are winning.
