It's unfortunate to hear how many people now view former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the NFL, even on his own team.
It sounds like the Pittsburgh Steelers know that Allar has all the potential in the world to be a very good player one day, but what he learned during his time with James Franklin and Penn State clearly wasn't the right way to play the quarterback position.
Multiple reporters have now stated that Allar will need to fix his footwork, get smarter on the field, and improve in other areas.
While we already knew that Allar would have to get better in multiple ways, it's still unfortunate to hear that he isn't viewed as highly as I once did and as some other Penn State fans did.
According to Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, much of it starts with his footwork, and he even went so far as to say that the Steelers are currently teaching him differently than he played in the early part of his career.
“It makes a difference,” McCarthy said of proper footwork for a passer, per TribLive. “It gives you the ability to play faster, gives you the ability to transition in and out of the challenges that occur throughout quarterback play.
“We’re teaching him different than the way he’s played before. He hasn’t spent a lot of time under center. He’s a run-and-shoot guy in high school. He’s played from 9 yards deep. So, there’s just a lot of newness to him.”
Allar doesn't seem too worried about this, as he's said a few times that he understands he needs to get better.
That doesn't necessarily mean that this is going to be an easy process, but it's always good to hear a player have confidence in getting better and be willing to do so. It would be very easy for a young quarterback to ignore the warning signs and not try to improve, but Allar has stated a few times now that he's ready to get to work and do what's needed on all fronts.
I think he can do it.
