The college athletics world was shaken up on Monday after the Brendan Sorsby result was handed down.
The college football world was shaken up on Monday afternoon down in Lubbock, Texas. The Brendan Sorsby gambling saga finally came to a close, and the resolution was a disaster.
Sorsby was found to have made thousands of bets for tens of thousands of dollars over the course of the last five-plus years. A good collection of those bets was placed on his Indiana team, which he was an active member of.
The result of the investigation and punishment was a complete and total disaster. A Texas court granted a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, making him eligible for the 2027 College Football season.
All of that legal jargon says that even though it was found that Sorsby was better on his very own team, he is still eligible to play in 2026-27.
From what history shows, many people have been punished 100-times harder for 100-times less the crime. That's not even the point; the major underlying point of this issue is that the integrity of competition is compromised with this ruling, and that is a precedent that shakes the core foundation of college sports and college football.
The reaction to this ruling is what is going to set the tone for the future of college sports. Because there is no current precedent for something like this, schools are flying blind in some sense, and their result is going to be something we have never seen before.
This ruling came down on Monday morning, and the Big Ten is the first to make a move as a total conference. The first two schools to make a ruling were Nebraska and Georgia, which mandated that no sport in their school had the authority to schedule Texas Tech at all.
It was just a few hours later that the Big Ten conference decided to respond in kind. The conference and all of its member schools, including Penn State, were set to meet on Monday night to discuss and debate a conference-wide mandate to not schedule the Red Raiders.
If this is the result, this would be a monumental decision set by the biggest conference in the entire sport.
No matter how it shakes out, college athletics changed today. The result and the reaction from the rest of the schools in the NCAA will alter the direction of college sports for good.
