Penn State head coach Matt Campbell names his wide receiver Karon Brookins a "super talent."
Penn State head coach Matt Campbell has a major challenge on his hands as he takes over the Nittany Lion Football Program.
The Nittany Lions have not had an elite wide receiver in their program in over a decade since they had Chris Godwin. Before that, it had been since the early 2000s since they had a guy who was a game-changing talent.
As a program, Penn State had two first-round wide receivers in the last quarter-century. That's simply not good enough to win in today's college football and specifically, in today's Big Ten.
Head coach Matt Campbell believes that he has the solution to this problem, and it comes by way of Ames, Iowa.
One of the key transfers that Campbell brought along with him to Happy Valley is wide receiver Karon Brookins.
Brookins was a key recruit for Campbell and his staff in the 2025 class when they were at Iowa State. He ended up being a full redshirt in his first year as he appeared in none of the Cyclones' games.
When he was coming out of high school, he was just a three-star recruit from New Jersey. He actually had very limited production as a high schooler, as he finished his career with just 46 catches for 779 yards and nine touchdowns.
The difference maker for Brookins? It's that he stands at 6'5" with solid speed and athleticism.
Campbell won the recruiting battle for Brookins over Pitt and West Virginia, who were after the wide receiver pretty hard. It is a pretty decent risk to take a guy who didn't have quite the production at the high school level, but has elite traits.
For Penn State, they simply need anything that they can get their hands on at that position.
The program and the fanbase have been so desperate for an elite talent at that position as they watch all of the other programs in the Big Ten pump out elite wide receivers year after year.
The goal for the Nittany Lions isn't just to make the playoffs every year. They have goals to win the Big Ten and be a consistent member of the College Football Playoff Final Four and National Championship.
To do that, in today's day and age, you just have to have elite wide receivers. Simple as that.
Campbell believes that he brought an elite one with him to Happy Valley, and Penn State fans hope that he is right.
