Penn State head coach Matt Campbell gets refreshingly honest about the current state of his Nittany Lions bunch.
Matt Campbell left the coach speak at the door this week. He addressed his team's shortcomings, didn't hide from it, spoke honestly, and gave the fanbase a real inside look at what the heck is going on with this program.
The Nittany Lions have not been this low since, well, last season when they went on the six-game losing stretch that cost James Franklin his job.
Now, after two straight horrific losses to Wisconsin and Northwestern, the Nittany Lions are caught licking their wounds, staring down a massive challenge this weekend against the USC Trojans for the White Out in Happy Valley.
During this week's press conference, Campbell addressed everything head-on, saying a lot of things about his program and the state that it is in. He mentioned that his group lacks an identity in all three phases of the game; they are playing inconsistently in all three phases, and they are a long way from getting it figured out.
He did throw in that there is a reason for it. He talked about how hard it is to mesh players, mesh cultures, and mesh mindsets into one locker room and come out with the ability to compete at a very high level.
While all of that is true, this Nittany Lions team had such a high outlook, and this season, no matter what the finish is, is going to feel like an incredible disappointment.
Now, to agree with Campbell a little bit and give him the benefit of the doubt, they basically are Iowa State 2.0 in the fact that they had over 20 transfers come from Ames to be the Nittany Lions.
While that is fine, let's not get it confused; the 2025 Cyclones weren't exactly the '08 Patriots. It is a bunch of average players who are scrappy and have the heart of a lion, but like high end athleticism.
That's a hard combination to bring into the Big Ten and expect to win.
People on the outside fell in love with the logo, fell in love with all of the things outside of what was going on inside the program, and believed that with the "schedule" Penn State has that they were going to be a fringe playoff team.
Well, now they are going to be grinding to make a Bowl Game.
It's all a part of the process, but a great place to get everything turned around would be this weekend against USC. Campbell pleaded with the fanbase to not give up on them quite yet. They are close to breaking through, and when they do, they are going to be a tough team to beat.
They will be a frisky opponent this year, with the hopes that next year they will be competing again at the top of the sport.
I'll believe him for now, but they have to start winning and start winning soon.
