The Penn State Nittany Lions will enter Saturday's game against 3-4 Purdue looking for their first win over a Power 4 program this season.

PSU started the season 3-0 with blowout wins over Marshall, Temple, and Buffalo. Those were supposed to be easy wins for Penn State.

The real challenge came when the Nittany Lions started their Big Ten schedule. Before the season, there were legitimate questions about how all 24 transfers from Iowa State, a Big 12 program, would play in the Big Ten.

The answer through four games is not good.

During his news conference on Wednesday, first-year head coach Matt Campbell talked about where his program is amid the losing streak. Per video posted by Thomas Frank Carr of On3, Franklin argued that it was his job as a leader to figure out how to make adjustments when things aren't going great.

For Campbell, winning in Year 1 with Penn State was never the main priority. He appeared to caution the fan base before the season, saying his goal was to build a strong culture this fall.

He continued that message on Wednesday, saying that he wants to lay the foundation for a program that can have sustained success.

Campbell's comments are interesting, given the fact that he inherited a program that had sustained success under his predecessor, James Franklin. PSU parted ways with Franklin because he couldn't win elite games.

Campbell didn't necessarily need to tear down the program to the studs to rebuild. However, given the timing of Campbell's hiring, the new head coach wasn't given an ideal opportunity to bring in elite players for this season.

It should have been easy to predict that Penn State would have a bad season regardless of a schedule that didn't include Indiana, Ohio State or Oregon.

There's no arguing that Campbell hasn't underwhelmed with this team. Certainly, Penn State could have developed its roster better.

With that being said, there's no reason to give up on the Campbell experiment. He needs an opportunity to recruit his own players. One would assume the Nittany Lions will be in good shape if the program gives Campbell the resources he needs to be aggressive in the transfer portal.

Campbell brought sustained success to Iowa State in the Big 12. There's no reason to think he can't do the same at Penn State even after a disappointing season in 2026. He had too much working against him.
