Penn State quarterback Drew Allar faced an uphill battle to be a Day 1 or Day 2 draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after he suffered a season-ending broken ankle injury in a loss to Northwestern at home in October.
Allar wasn't having a great season up to that point, struggling in an overtime loss to Oregon. He put up good numbers against non-power four competition but struggled against Big Ten teams.
Allar's numbers were nowhere near being close to on track to what he did in 2024 when he led Penn State to the College Football Playoff semifinal.
However, Allar did put in a good workout during the 2026 NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis earlier this month.
With lots of NFL teams needing quarterbacks, Allar will likely find a home during the weekend of the draft.
Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, the Jets brought in nearly 12 Penn State players for a private workout on Friday.
"On Friday they had something like a dozen Penn Staters in for local work or for a private workout," Hughes said. "Among those players, the big name there was Drew Allar.
"And among the reasons why the Jets chose to bring everybody with Drew Allar... is when they put him through a workout, he was throwing to his guys, so you got a chance to see him work with his receivers, his tight end, some of his backs."
New York didn't attend Penn State's pro day, but wanted to see Allar in person. The Jets are in need of a quarterback after trading Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs and trading for Geno Smith.
Hughes said the Jets were "impressed" with Allar.
"Was told, they came away pretty impressed," Hughes said. "He's a big dude, strong arm, great. Build a lot of attributes there that you love. There's just some of the mental game that you need to pick up there."
The Jets would be an interesting place for Allar to end up. New York hired Frank Reich as its offensive coordinator, and he wanted to bring in Smith.
If Reich likes Allar, he could be a developmental project for the Jets this fall.
