The New York Jets are one of the more interesting teams entering the NFL Draft, and it could have an impact on some players from Penn State. As the Jets look at the QB position, Penn State standout Drew Allar sounds like someone who could possibly be in the mix.
According to Connor Hughes of SNY, the Jets recently hosted a group of Penn State players for private workouts, including Allar. While it’s uncertain just how much interest there is, Allar would sneakily be a very good addition.
If Allar is anything that he was expected to be in college, and what he was at parts of his college career, he could sneakily be one of the better quarterbacks, if not the best, in this draft.
“The Jets had a number of Penn State players at the facility for private workouts this weekend, with the pro day circuit set to begin, per sources,” Hughes wrote. “QB Drew Allar was among them. Team decision makers watched him throw on Friday. Benefit of having him with a number of other: They could see him throw to his guys.”
While Allar would be a nice addition, it’s fair to mention that Rich Cimini reported earlier in free agency that they might not go with a quarterback in this draft.
“One thing we heard: The low-cost trade for Smith (only $3.3 million in salary) reinforces the belief that the Jets are waiting for the 2027 draft to find their long-term solution at QB. The one caveat: if they're blown away by Ty Simpson (Alabama) during the predraft process,” he wrote.
Allar has an interesting profile when it comes to what he can do in the NFL. The ex-Penn Stater has all of the physical tools teams look for, including size and arm strength, but there were times when he couldn’t read a defense and struggled against the best teams in the country.
Was some of that James Franklin? Possibly, but we won’t know for sure until we see how Allar looks at the highest level.
If I were a decision maker in the Jets facility, I’d give him a shot.
