Penn State's headline recruit, James Armstrong already doing his part to bring in more Nittany Lions.
Penn State's top recruit, James Armstrong, is already earning his keep in Happy Valley. Less than a week into his time as a Nittany Lion, Armstrong is already putting in the work to bring some of the top recruits to Penn State.
Armstrong is one of the top quarterback recruits in the 2028 class and will bring a completely different feel to the Penn State quarterback position.
For the last 15 years, the only dual-threat quarterback who has worn the blue and white has been Trace McSorley. Other than that, it has been statuesque quarterbacks who stand in the pocket and try to push the ball down the field.
The problem with that philosophy is that you need to nail the quarterback, and you need to have the top skill guys around him. That is a very small needle to thread, and the Nittany Lions have been unable to do it to this point.
What is nearly a guaranteed success in today's college football is a dual-threat quarterback. The most successful teams over the past five years have had a dual-threat guy behind the line of scrimmage. Now, finally, the Nittany Lions are just a couple of years away from having one themselves.
Heading into his junior season, Armstrong stands at 6'3" and weighs in at over 230 pounds as a really young man. He has a lot of room to grow and mature into his body, and he is already in an incredible spot.
In his sophomore season, the second year as a starter for Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, he accounted for over 3,000 yards and 37 touchdowns. He is an incredibly bright spot for the future of Penn State, but it isn't stopping with him.
Armstrong has made it known that he is on the phone, recruiting some of the other greats in the class. He said that he has already been in contact with Jaden Jones and Carter Barrett. He followed up by saying that he needs to get on with every top guy in the state.
He said, "(we are) doing everything we can do to make our recruiting class great."
This is huge for the crown jewel of the recruiting class, who is truly going to be evaluated on his ability to turn this program completely around.
It is yet another breath of fresh air for the current state of the Penn State program. James Armstrong is committed to continue making the 2028 class great. If he does, he will enter his era at Penn State as a fan favorite from the very start.
