The season is too far gone at this point.
Penn State football certainly hasn't had the best history at wide receiver. We can go down a long list of Penn State wide receivers who have played at a high level over the past decade or so, but the reality is that it's part of why the school hasn't competed with some of the best teams in the Big Ten.
The harsh reality is that when Penn State typically plays teams like Ohio State, Indiana, and Oregon, it gets outplayed because it lacks wide receiver talent compared to the other three best schools in the Big Ten.
As for Penn State talent at wide receiver, guys like Allen Robinson, Jahan Dotson, Chris Godwin, and others have made names for themselves. However, Penn State still just doesn't have that superstar wide receiver in college, and that's been an issue.
What makes it even more concerning is that this year, Penn State doesn't even have anyone close to DaeSean Hamilton or others.
Not that we can expect them to be those types of players, but Penn State really needed somebody to step up at the wide receiver position, and with Koby Howard out due to an injury he suffered earlier in the year, nobody has stepped up in a major way.
However, fifth-year senior Chase Sowell is trying to change that narrative.
Sowell, who started his career at Colorado before transferring to East Carolina, then Iowa State, finds himself at Penn State now with 34 receptions for 510 yards. He hasn't been bad by any means, but again, definitely not elite.
“That was what me, Brett [Eskildsen], Amarion Jackson, Zay Robinson, Koby [Howard], all of us talked about was like, ‘Hey, no matter what, we're going to do everything in our power to change the narrative because this is gonna be one season that we're going to remember for the rest of our lives,’” Chase Sowell said, per Will Horstman.
“Whether it goes good or bad, I want to have the memories that I know our room changed history.”
In a perfect world, Sowell's comments would become reality. However, with the Nittany Lions no longer having a chance to make the College Football Playoff, all of that stuff is out the window.
We would have loved to see this team have wide receivers who can make plays at a big-time level, but it doesn't look like that's a realistic ask any longer.
It's easy to say that, outside of Howard, Sowell has undoubtedly been the best wide receiver on this offense.
He's been very good this year, so none of that is his fault. As for some other players on the roster, they really needed to step up and never did. It feels like another season where Penn State just needed more at the position and, unfortunately, couldn't get it.
