Former Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar is continuing to impress heading into his rookie season.
Former Penn State Nittany Lions star quarterback Drew Allar is entering his rookie season in the NFL, and he has been impressive in the preseason thus far.
In Allar's first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, he completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions while rushing for two yards and a touchdown.
In his second preseason matchup against the New York Jets, Allar completed 11 of 23 passes for 110 yards while rushing for four yards. The 22-year-old quarterback had a solid career at Penn State before the Steelers selected him in the third round of the draft.
Allar was a three-year starter for the Nittany Lions and showcased a ton of potential. In the 2023 season, Allar completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,631 yards, 25 touchdowns, and two interceptions while rushing for 206 yards and four touchdowns.
Allar followed it up with a great 2024 campaign, completing 66.5 percent of his passes for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, along with 302 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.
IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectIn 2025, Allar only appeared in six games due to injury, completing 64.8 percent of his passes for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He added 172 yards and a touchdown in the run game.
It was a disappointing season for Allar and Penn State's program as a whole, as they finished with a 7-6 record.
The Nittany Lions entered the season as favorites to win the National Championship, but a mid-season collapse led to the firing of James Franklin.
Matt Campbell will be tasked with turning the program around after he was hired as the head coach, and Rocco Becht will assume the role of starting quarterback as Allar begins his rookie campaign in the NFL.
The former Penn State star seems to be translating his game well to the NFL level and could beat out Will Howard for the QB3 spot. Once veteran Aaron Rodgers retires after the season, Allar will have a chance to establish himself as the long-term starter in Pittsburgh.
