Among the many things former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar will need to hope for over the next few months, getting an actual opportunity to play should be at the top of that list.
However, given the Pittsburgh Steelers' situation with Aaron Rodgers, it doesn't seem very likely that Allar will have a chance to play. It remains uncertain what Pittsburgh's plan is for seeing whether he can play at this level, though having that situation figured out ahead of the 2027 NFL Draft should be a priority, at the very least.
That doesn't mean Allar needs to start 13 games to see if he can play, but at least getting an opportunity to compete during training camp should be a top priority for Pittsburgh.
The other option, more unfortunately, and something nobody wishes for, would be Rodgers going down with an injury. If that's the case, the Steelers would have to look at Allar or Will Howard as potential options to at least get a start.
However, even if that happens, one writer doesn't believe it will result in the former Penn State star not being replaced in the 2027 NFL Draft.
“Is it possible Rodgers goes down with another serious injury, and either Allar or Howard rises to the occasion and proves themselves worthy of the starting role beyond this season? Sure. But it's unlikely, and that's the only scenario that would give the Steelers any pause about heading into next offseason with a wide-open search for Rodgers' long-term replacement. If that doesn't happen, and the Steelers end up enamored with one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL Draft class, don't be surprised when they don't hesitate to take another swing at the game's most important position,” Luke Easterling wrote.
I don't think it's crazy to say that even if Rodgers were to go down, unless Allar looked like a star, the Steelers could still look to go after a quarterback in next year's draft.
It's unfortunate that all of these things are in Allar's way, but this is just the reality of playing in the NFL. It seems the Steelers understand the need to compete in the future, and if they find a franchise quarterback they like, that's who they'll go with.
